A crypto swap quote should show more than a token amount or a single “fee.” Before confirmation, users need to see the estimated output, the costs that apply to the route, how the trade affects its price, and the execution limit protecting them if the market moves. Those are related parts of a swap, but they are not interchangeable.
What does a crypto swap really cost?
There is no universal swap fee. The amount a user receives depends on the route and its pool or protocol fees, the trade’s effect on available liquidity, and whether the quote remains achievable when the transaction executes. The transaction also has a network cost, and some interfaces or routes may charge separately.
For a clear quote, show the estimated output beside each applicable cost rather than folding everything into one number. Keep the following concepts distinct:
- Pool or protocol fee: A fee associated with the pool or protocol used by the route. Fee schedules can vary between versions and pools.
- Network cost: The cost of submitting the transaction to the network. Display it separately from the pool fee and exchange rate.
- Price impact: The effect of the user’s trade on the pool’s price, given available liquidity. It is not a separate fee.
- Interface or routing charge: A separate charge, if the particular interface or route actually applies one. Do not imply one exists when it does not.
- Slippage protection: The limit on how far execution can move from the quote. It is an execution bound, not a fee.
Uniswap’s documented parameters illustrate why a single platform-wide percentage can mislead: its v2 pools charge a flat 0.30% swap fee; standard v3 tiers are 0.05%, 0.30%, and 1%, with additional tiers potentially enabled by UNI governance; and v4 pool creators can set fees from 0% to 100% in 0.0001% increments, with dynamic fees also possible through hooks. These are Uniswap-specific parameters, not typical market rates or a prediction of the fee on any particular route. See Uniswap’s fee documentation.

Why can the received amount differ from the swap quote?
A displayed quote is an estimate based on the route and market state at the time it is made. It can become stale while a transaction is pending. If the market moves before execution, the actual output may differ, subject to the transaction’s execution protection.
Two effects matter, and they happen for different reasons:

Price impact comes from the trade itself
In an automated market maker, a swap trades against pool liquidity rather than matching discrete order-book orders. A trade changes the balance of assets in the pool and therefore its price. Larger trades relative to available pool depth generally have greater price impact; low liquidity can also make impact greater. Uniswap explains this mechanism in its guides to price impact and how Uniswap works.
Slippage comes from movement after the quote
Slippage is the difference between the expected execution and the actual execution after the market changes while a transaction is pending. It is not another name for price impact: price impact is caused by the trade against liquidity, while slippage describes a change between quote and execution. Uniswap Labs explains the distinction in its price impact versus price slippage guide.

What should a swap confirmation screen show?
A useful quote puts the expected result, costs, and execution protection together so users can assess them before confirming. This is a design recommendation based on how swaps work, not a universal legal requirement.
- Expected output: Show the estimated token amount the current route would deliver, and make the quote’s freshness or refresh state visible.
- Pool or protocol fee: Show the fee relevant to the route and identify its basis. Do not suggest all pools share one rate.
- Price impact: Show the estimated effect on pool pricing and make unusually high impact conspicuous. Uniswap says its interface anticipates price impact and warns users when it is unusually high.
- Network cost: Present the transaction cost separately from the pool fee and exchange rate. Whether a user pays a network cost when a transaction fails depends on product and network behavior; do not promise a universal outcome.
- Interface or routing charge: List it separately if the route or interface actually charges one. Product charges can change, so the display should reflect the active product and route.
- Slippage tolerance and minimum received: State the allowed execution movement and the minimum output in plain language. Explain that a looser tolerance permits more movement, while execution beyond the bound may cause the transaction to fail.
How should slippage protection be explained?
Describe the tolerance as a guardrail: it sets how much the execution may worsen from the quoted expectation before the transaction is rejected. It does not guarantee the quoted amount, and it is not an additional charge. If execution falls outside the allowed bound, the transaction can revert instead of completing at an unacceptable price.

Keep the quote’s age and the protection limit visible at the point of confirmation. Uniswap Developers note that “Price impact and slippage can both change while a transaction is pending, so integrations typically include user protection checks on top of protocol execution checks.” That is an explanation of integration practice, not a regulator’s requirement. See Understanding Swaps on Uniswap.

The cited material supports this screen design as a transparency recommendation; it does not establish a universal legal duty to use this exact layout. EU rules provide a narrower example: the European Commission’s delegated measure says specified conflicts-of-interest disclosures for covered crypto-asset service providers must be detailed, specific, and clear, prominently available on the provider’s website and in formats available on devices used to provide services, and kept up to date. This concerns conflicts-of-interest disclosures under MiCA and its delegated acts; it is not proof that every decentralized interface is covered or that it dictates this swap quote layout. Coverage depends on the provider, activity, custody model, user location, and jurisdiction. Consult the European Commission delegated measure and its MiCA implementing and delegated acts page for the EU context.
