The Motorola Edge 40 is a compelling 2023 premium mid-range phone if you value a slim design, a fast curved display, IP68 water and dust resistance, and both wired and wireless charging. Its Dimensity 8020 hardware is well suited to everyday use, but the curved screen can be awkward, its cameras are capable rather than class-leading, and update delivery depends on the exact regional and carrier variant. Whether it is worth buying now comes down to the price, warranty and condition of the particular phone—not its launch price.

What the Motorola Edge 40 offers

Motorola launched the Edge 40 with Android 13, a MediaTek Dimensity 8020 processor, 8 GB of LPDDR4X RAM, 256 GB of UFS 3.1 storage and a 4,400 mAh battery. Its 6.55-inch pOLED display has a curved design and a 144 Hz refresh rate. Motorola’s launch specifications also list a 50 MP main camera with an f/1.4 aperture, IP68 protection, 68 W wired charging and 15 W wireless charging. Motorola’s launch specifications describe the slim design, metal frame and vegan-leather finish option.

Those features make the phone’s pitch clear: it combines a high-refresh display and substantial hardware with charging flexibility and a higher water-and-dust resistance rating than many mid-range phones of its generation. The trade-off is that its curved screen and camera processing will not suit everyone.

Motorola Edge 40 pros and cons

Pros Cons
Slim, light-feeling design, with a metal frame and vegan-leather option described by Motorola Curved edges can make typing and gaming less comfortable and may cause accidental touches
6.55-inch pOLED display with a 144 Hz refresh rate Camera results are capable but not consistently class-leading
IP68 rating, with defined limits for water exposure Update schedules and rollout timing can vary by model, region and carrier
68 W wired charging and 15 W wireless charging Wireless charger is sold separately
Dimensity 8020, 8 GB RAM and 256 GB storage Its 4,400 mAh battery’s runtime depends on workload; gaming and heavy use can drain it faster

How good is the Motorola Edge 40 display and design?

The 6.55-inch curved pOLED panel and 144 Hz refresh rate make scrolling and compatible content look fluid, while the slim construction helps the phone feel less bulky than many large-screen handsets. The curved edges also make the screen feel immersive. They are a real ergonomic compromise, though: Gadgets 360 and TechRadar both noted that the curves can be annoying, and Gadgets 360 found them awkward for some interactions. If you often type quickly, play games with touch controls near the edges, or prefer a flat panel, try the phone in person if possible.

#1 Best Overall
Motorola Moto Edge 2022, 128GB + 6GB RAM, Mineral Gray - Unlocked (Renewed)
  • Model Number: XT2205-1
  • This device is unlocked and will be compatible with all major US carriers (Does NOT work internationally)
  • OLED 144Hz, HDR10+ (6.6 inch) 1080 x 2400 Pixel Display
  • 5,000mAh Battery, with 30W Wired Charging and 15W Wireless Charging
  • Triple Rear Camera with 50MP Wide Lens and 32MP Front Selfie Camera with 1080p video

How good are its cameras?

The rear camera setup is versatile enough for everyday photography, but reviewers did not consider it a standout camera system. Gadgets 360 found that the main camera captured good detail but could oversharpen images and produce saturated colors. It also found the autofocus ultrawide useful for macro photography, with distortion toward the edges. TechRadar’s 2023 review described overall camera quality as average. These are reviewers’ assessments, not a guarantee of how every scene or software version will look.

For a buying decision, look beyond the 50 MP main-camera headline. If low-light shots, natural skin tones, selfies or video consistency matter most, compare sample images and video from the exact phone with alternatives at similar local prices. The available review findings do not establish that the Edge 40 leads those areas.

Performance and battery life

The Dimensity 8020, 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of storage provide strong everyday hardware for a phone from this generation. Gadgets 360 reported smooth routine performance in most cases. In its gaming tests, it saw some stutters at high settings before performance smoothed out, and mild warmth around the camera module after extended gameplay. That makes the Edge 40 a more straightforward choice for daily apps than for someone whose priority is sustained gaming at demanding settings.

Battery results vary with brightness, network conditions, apps and workload. In Gadgets 360’s review, the phone lasted a full day with medium use and no gaming, with an average screen-on time of 7 hours 30 minutes. The reviewer also measured 15 hours 31 minutes in an HD video-loop test. These are review-specific results, not a promise of the runtime an individual owner will get; heavy use and gaming can reduce the remaining charge.

Charging: 68 W wired and 15 W wireless

Motorola lists 68 W wired charging and 15 W wireless charging. Wireless charging is a useful extra at this price tier, but Motorola says the wireless charger is sold separately, so account for the cost and availability of a compatible charger if you plan to use it. In Gadgets 360’s test, the Edge 40 charged from zero to 75 percent in 30 minutes. Treat that as the review’s measured result rather than a guaranteed charging time; charger, conditions and use can affect results.

What IP68 protection means for the Edge 40

IP68 does not mean waterproof. Motorola’s user guide says the rating was tested under controlled laboratory conditions and permits submersion in still fresh water up to 1.5 metres deep for up to 30 minutes. The guide warns that resistance decreases through normal wear; it also advises against pressurised water and liquids other than fresh water, and says not to charge the phone while it is wet. The rating is a defined test boundary, not a reason to deliberately expose a phone to water.

How long will the Motorola Edge 40 get updates?

Update support needs to be checked against the exact model and market. Motorola’s statement for model XT2303-2 specifies four years of security updates from May 2023 to May 2027. TechRadar reported the phone’s launch promise as three Android OS upgrades and four years of security updates. Motorola cautions that update cycles can vary by carrier and that regular updates or OS upgrades may delay security patches. Do not assume every regional variant has the same schedule or that a particular update is already installed.

Before buying, ask the seller for the exact model number and check its current software and security patch level. The phone launched with Android 13; launch-era information does not establish the Android version or patch status of a used or currently sold unit.

Is the Motorola Edge 40 worth buying?

It can be a good buy when the specific unit is in sound condition, has appropriate local warranty coverage and costs less than competing phones that better match your priorities. TechRadar’s 2023 UK review listed a launch price of £529.99, while Gadgets 360 reported a ₹29,999 launch price in India. Those are historical launch prices, not current market quotes; current new, used, refurbished and carrier prices are not established here.

When comparing a local offer with alternatives, weigh the full package rather than relying on an old launch comparison. Check warranty and condition, the curved-versus-flat screen trade-off, camera consistency, sustained gaming performance and heat, wired and wireless charging, regional update support, and the practical limits of the IP rating. TechRadar’s comparison with the Pixel 7 and Gadgets 360’s references to the Redmi Note 12 Pro+ 5G, iQOO Neo 7 and Poco F5 reflect 2023 launch context, not a current shortlist.
