You can use one to check a transaction’s status, confirmations, inputs and outputs, or fee details. It displays blockchain data; it is not the Bitcoin network and does not decide whether a transaction is valid.
What does a Bitcoin block explorer do?
Bitcoin’s blockchain is a shared public ledger of confirmed transactions. A block explorer makes selected ledger data easier to search and read in a browser. It is a lookup tool, not a separate ledger: viewing a record does not change it or confirm a pending transaction.
Explorer pages also do not establish who owns or controls an address. An address is a destination identifier in the displayed transaction data, not proof of a person’s identity.
What can you look up?
For example, Blockstream Explorer accepts a transaction ID, a Bitcoin address, or a block number. Its transaction pages can display:

- Whether a transaction is unconfirmed or confirmed, and its confirmation count.
- The transaction’s inputs and outputs.
- Its fee and fee rate.
Blockstream describes its explorer as built on Esplora, an open-source explorer and API. Its service covers Bitcoin and Liquid, so check the selected network before interpreting a result. Blockstream’s transaction lookup guide explains how to search.
How to look up a Bitcoin transaction
- Open a Bitcoin explorer. Choose the Bitcoin network, rather than another network the service may support.
- Enter the transaction ID. Paste the transaction ID (also called a txid) into the search field. You can also search by address or block number when you want those records.
- Read the status and details. Check whether the page marks the transaction unconfirmed or confirmed, then review its confirmation count, inputs, outputs, and fee information.
- Interpret an unconfirmed result cautiously. It indicates that the explorer can see the transaction as pending; it does not guarantee when or whether it will be included in a block.
What do unconfirmed and confirmed mean?
Unconfirmed: visible in a mempool
A transaction that has not yet been included in a block may be held in a node’s mempool. Each node maintains its own mempool, and mempool contents can differ according to network activity, fees, and node policies. An explorer may show a transaction it can observe there, but that status is not a promise of a particular mining time.

Confirmed: included in a block
A transaction has one confirmation when a miner includes it in a block accepted by the network. Each later block added after that block increases the confirmation count. More confirmations make earlier records harder to reverse, but there is no single confirmation threshold that applies to every use case.
Bitcoin.org gives an approximate range of about 10 to 60 minutes for a transaction’s first confirmation. That undated guidance, accessed in 2026, is an estimate rather than a guarantee: block timing and transaction selection vary. Bitcoin.org’s transaction guidance provides more context.

Blockstream Explorer and mempool.space
Both Blockstream Explorer and mempool.space are examples of Bitcoin explorers, not a ranked or independently tested comparison. Blockstream documents transaction, address, and block searches and also supports Liquid. The Mempool Open Source Project describes mempool.space as a Bitcoin mempool and blockchain explorer focused on the fee market and a multi-layer ecosystem; it says the service is self-hosted without trusted third parties. Mempool’s FAQ describes the project.
When choosing an explorer for a lookup, consider what you need to inspect: supported search inputs, transaction details shown, network scope, and whether you want a hosted website or open-source software you can inspect or run. These features do not by themselves establish comparative accuracy, privacy, uptime, geographic availability, or API limits.
