ImageX was Microsoft’s Windows imaging and deployment utility for working with Windows Imaging Format (WIM) files. It is now a historical tool: Microsoft’s technical reference says that DISM replaces ImageX. For current Windows deployment guidance, Microsoft documents DISM commands to capture, inspect, apply, and service WIM images.
What ImageX did with WIM files
ImageX was associated with Windows deployment workflows that capture or apply images stored in WIM files. A WIM is an image file format; one WIM can contain multiple indexed images. That means a deployment technician may need to inspect the file and choose a particular image by index or name before applying it.
Microsoft’s current guidance uses DISM for these operations. The procedures below describe that current guidance, not a guarantee that every command or option shown was available in the Windows 7-era version of ImageX or DISM.
What replaced ImageX?
Microsoft’s DISM technical reference states: “DISM replaces several deployment tools, including PEimg, Intlcfg, ImageX, and Package Manager.” Accordingly, DISM is the current Microsoft-documented path for common WIM capture, apply, and servicing tasks.

- NOTE: This USB flash drive does not include a Windows key, you must have a Windows key to activate Windows, but you can still clean install or reinstall Windows 7.
- Latest Version: Deployed with the latest official original version of Windows 7 (SP1), no viruses, no spyware, 100% clean.
- Professional: Using professional Windows 7 production tool to ensure product quality.
- Compatibility: Compatible with all PC brands, laptop or desktop, 64-bit/32-bit, Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo, Samsung, Acer, Toshiba and more.
- Plug & Play: Includes user guide and online technical support services. Plug it in and you are ready to go.
DISM’s compatibility depends on its version. Microsoft says DISM can work with older Windows image files, but not with images newer than the installed DISM version. The Microsoft pages linked here show current Windows 11-view documentation; consult the documentation for the specific DISM and Windows versions you use before relying on a particular parameter or behavior.
Capture a Windows partition into a WIM
Microsoft’s current single-WIM workflow prepares the image, boots the computer into Windows PE, and captures the Windows partition. A representative command from its guidance is:
Rank #2
- Windows 7 All Versions 32/64 Bit Install Repair Recover & Restore USB & Drivers pack DVD. Can used to re-install Windows or repair boot manager or black / blue screen or recover or restore Windows. Install feature requires that you have a key. This software does not include a key
Dism /Capture-Image /ImageFile:"D:ImagesFabrikam.wim" /CaptureDir:C: /Name:Fabrikam
In this example, the captured image is written to D:ImagesFabrikam.wim, the capture directory is C:, and the image is named Fabrikam. The destination may be removable storage or another file location. See Microsoft’s capture and apply guide for the surrounding preparation and Windows PE steps.
Inspect and apply a WIM image
Find the image index or name
Before applying a WIM that may contain several images, query its contents:

Dism /Get-ImageInfo /ImageFile:<path>
Use the returned index or image name to select the intended Windows image. Microsoft documents querying image information and applying an image by index or name in its DISM image-management command reference.
Apply the selected image
Partition the target disk appropriately before applying the image. A representative command applying index 1 to the W: drive is:
Rank #4
- Complete Windows 7 Installation & Recovery – This USB includes a full installation of Windows 7 (64-bit) for reinstalling, repairing, or upgrading your system.
- Easy to Use Bootable USB – Simply plug the USB into your computer and follow the on-screen instructions to install or repair Windows 7.
- Perfect for New Installs or System Recovery – Ideal for clean installations, system recovery, or troubleshooting Windows issues on compatible PCs.
- No Internet Required for Installation – Works offline, so you can install Windows 7 without needing an internet connection.
- Compatible with Most Older PCs – Works on most Windows-compatible desktops and laptops that support Windows 7 (UEFI or Legacy BIOS).
Dism /Apply-Image /ImageFile:install.wim /Index:1 /ApplyDir:W:
This command lays down the selected image files; by itself it is not a complete bootable-device deployment recipe. Partition layout and boot configuration depend on whether the target uses UEFI with GPT or legacy BIOS with MBR. Microsoft’s example deployment script handles boot files separately with BCDBoot and may also configure Windows Recovery Environment. Follow the complete procedure for the target firmware and partition scheme rather than treating image application as the final step.

Offline servicing lets you make changes to an image without booting the installed Windows environment. The basic sequence is to mount the image at a directory, make the required changes, and unmount it. Choose /Commit to save changes or /Discard to abandon them. Microsoft’s offline image modification guide describes this process.
Choosing instructions for Windows 7 or newer Windows
The title refers to Windows 7, but the capture, apply, and servicing examples above come from Microsoft’s current Windows 11-view documentation. Do not assume that a current DISM option works on Windows 7, or that an ImageX-era workflow is the right choice for a current system. Match the command reference to the operating system and DISM version actually in use. For example, Microsoft’s command reference identifies extended attribute capture and application as a capability added in Windows 10 version 1607, not a universal option across older versions.
For current WIM work, use Microsoft’s DISM documentation as the starting point. For a Windows 7-era machine, verify tool and command compatibility against documentation for that version before running deployment commands.
