Yes—an eligible Cisco 800 Series router can give you hands-on practice with router configuration and the IOS command line. But the family is legacy hardware, and no single 800 Series model should be treated as a complete CCNA lab. Check the exact model and software for feature support, then pair physical practice with Cisco’s current exam topics and its recommended lab software, Packet Tracer or Cisco Modeling Labs.
What an 800 Series router can teach you
Cisco’s 800 Series configuration guide covers core router tasks, including command-line access, global settings, interfaces, WAN and LAN configuration, loopbacks, and static and dynamic routes. It includes configuration examples and verification steps, making compatible models useful for practising how to enter configuration modes, apply supported settings, and check results.
That is meaningful physical IOS practice, but it is not evidence that every configuration in the guide works on every router in the family. Cisco explicitly cautions: “Individual router models may not support every feature described in this guide.” Confirm the model’s compatibility information and installed software before planning a lab around a specific feature.
Is it enough for CCNA preparation?
No. A physical 800 Series router can cover some router CLI work; it does not, by itself, cover the breadth of the CCNA. Cisco’s CCNA study tips advise candidates to use the official exam topics and practise configuring and troubleshooting routers and switches. Cisco describes coverage that also includes wireless, security fundamentals, and introductory automation and programmability.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual Gigabit Ethernet Ports: Features 2 RJ45 10/100/1000 LAN/WAN ports for high-speed network connectivity and flexible deployment options
- Enhanced High-Speed WAN Interface Card Slots: Equipped with 2 EHWIC slots for modular expansion and customization of network services
- Security Feature Set: Includes SEC feature set with embedded hardware encryption acceleration and advanced security services for comprehensive network protection
- Doublewide EWIC Slot: Provides 1 doublewide EWIC slot that occupies both standard EHWIC slots when used, offering flexibility for high-density interface requirements
- USB Connectivity: Includes 1 USB port for external storage, configuration management, and additional connectivity options
Cisco recommends hands-on labs and names Packet Tracer and Cisco Modeling Labs as software options. Use the 800 Series as an optional physical device for supported router functions, while using the official topic list and suitable labs to address the rest of the exam scope.
Physical 800 Series router or software lab?
| Option | Useful for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Physical Cisco 800 Series router | Practising supported configuration tasks on hardware and using a router’s IOS command line. | Exact model, installed software, interface and feature support. Cisco warns that support varies by model. |
| Packet Tracer | Software-based lab practice; Cisco lists it as a lab option for CCNA study. | Use the current exam topics to decide which skills your lab work must cover. |
| Cisco Modeling Labs | Software-based lab practice; Cisco also lists it as a CCNA lab option. | Use the current exam topics to decide which skills your lab work must cover. |
The options are not presented as interchangeable or as a tested performance ranking. A physical router offers device-specific experience; software labs are among Cisco’s recommended ways to practise a wider set of exam skills. Choose based on the functions you need to practise and the setup available to you.

What to know before buying a used 800 Series router
Cisco’s 800 Series support page describes the family as supported but no longer sold by Cisco. Cisco lists an end-of-sale date of 21 November 2023 and an end-of-support date of 30 November 2028. These dates apply to the family information on Cisco’s page; confirm the lifecycle status of the particular model before purchase. The family is legacy hardware, so a unit you find will be used or surplus rather than a current Cisco sale.
The family includes distinct models such as the 800M, 819, C881, C887VA and C891F; “800 Series” alone does not tell you which features, ports or software capabilities a unit has. Cisco links a compatibility matrix from the family page. Check the exact model and its software documentation rather than assuming another 800 Series router’s lab instructions will apply.

- Verify the full model number and the interfaces you need for your planned exercises.
- Check that the installed software supports the features you intend to practise.
- Confirm the power supply and any included accessories.
- For console access, check which cable fits that specific model’s console interface; the family name alone does not establish cable compatibility.
- Review the seller’s condition description and return terms. Cisco’s support pages do not establish used-market price, availability, or seller quality.
How to decide whether it fits your study setup
- Start with Cisco’s current CCNA exam topics. Identify the router tasks you want to practise and the other areas—such as switching, wireless, security fundamentals, and introductory automation and programmability—that your lab plan must cover.
- Match the device to those tasks. Look up the exact 800 Series model and software before relying on it for an interface or routing feature.
- Plan for the full scope. Use a compatible physical router where it adds useful IOS practice, and consider Cisco’s named software lab options for additional work.
- Assess a used unit as a specific device, not as a family-wide promise. Confirm its model, condition, software and included equipment before buying.
Which 800 Series model is best?
The available Cisco information does not establish one best model for CCNA study or compare models against the current exam. Cisco lists multiple models and points readers to compatibility information, while warning that feature support differs. Choose only after confirming that a specific unit supports the exercises you want; do not infer suitability from the 800 Series label alone.
