A scroll-driven video hero ties the video’s timeline to the visitor’s scroll position: scrolling scrubs the film forward or backward instead of starting ordinary autoplay. One case-study author reports building a ten-second, scroll-scrubbed hero and earning 100s across Lighthouse categories, but those results describe that project—not a score any implementation can count on.
How does a scroll-driven video hero work?
“A video that plays on scroll is not a video that autoplays,” as the case-study author puts it. In this design, scrolling changes the target time in the video. The page then seeks toward that time, so the visitor controls which moment appears by moving through the page.
The author’s implementation used a ten-second film across a hero section seven screen-heights tall, with five caption bands fading in and out as the visitor scrolled. It is a visual sequence, not a conventional video player with a play button. Scrubbing can move in either direction, unlike normal playback.

How did the author connect scroll position to the video?
The implementation maps scroll progress to a target value for video.currentTime. The displayed frame follows that target through time-based easing: rather than jumping directly to every new target, progress approaches it smoothly. The author says the easing was intended to feel consistent on 60 Hz and 120 Hz displays, and that the animation loop stops once it converges.

Seeking is also gated while another seek is underway, preventing new time requests from piling up. These details describe the author’s approach, not a rule that every video animation must use the same technique.
Why use refs instead of updating React state for every frame?
React provided the page’s markup, while a hook used refs to write changing values directly to DOM nodes. The author avoided routing a roughly frame-by-frame animation loop through React state. That can reduce unnecessary component updates in this particular pattern; it does not mean React state is unsuitable for animation in general.
What happened on phones?
The author reports that the video was not loaded on phones, and says it streamed while downloading on other devices. The available description does not explain how the device policy or streaming arrangement was implemented, so those behaviors should be treated as features of this project rather than copy-and-paste instructions.

Can a video hero still get a 100 Lighthouse score?
The case-study author reports Lighthouse scores of 100 for performance, accessibility, best practices, and SEO on the live site. The author also reports Largest Contentful Paint of 0.47 seconds on desktop and 1.64 seconds on mobile. The accessible account does not establish the measurement date, Lighthouse version, test devices, network conditions, or number of runs, and the results were not independently tested. They are an example of what that author measured, not a current guarantee or a reproducible benchmark.
The author says the page was prerendered, leaving about 1,450 words readable with JavaScript disabled. That is a reported property of the project, not a general outcome of adding a video hero.
How should you load the video without slowing the page?
Choose a loading strategy based on the video’s role. A full-bleed, immediately visible hero may need a different approach from decorative footage below the fold. Browser hints help express intent, but they do not force every browser or device to behave identically.

Understand preload, poster, and lazy loading
MDN’s video element documentation describes preload as a hint: none indicates the video should not be preloaded, metadata asks for metadata, and auto permits the whole file to be downloaded. Defaults vary, and autoplay takes precedence over preload, so a preload value is not a cross-browser promise.

A poster image can provide the initial visual while the video downloads. MDN recommends explicitly setting video dimensions to reduce layout shifts, particularly for lazy-loaded video. Its documentation also describes loading="lazy" as deferring video loading until it is near the viewport, and notes that lazy video loading depends on JavaScript being enabled. Consider the no-JavaScript experience as part of the design rather than assuming deferred media will appear in every circumstance.
Protect the page’s most important content
web.dev’s video performance guidance recommends suitable video encodings and explains that multiple source formats can provide browser fallbacks. It also warns that autoplaying video begins downloading immediately, so autoplay should be limited to cases where it is needed and expected.

A poster can improve the initial view, but if that image is the Largest Contentful Paint element, its priority matters: preloading it may compete with other critical resources. Treat the poster and video as part of the page’s loading plan, not as cost-free decoration.
Third-party embeds can add both network resources and main-thread work. The same web.dev article reports, citing HTTP Archive, that YouTube embeds block the main thread for more than 1.7 seconds for the median website. That statistic concerns YouTube embeds and the median website; it is not a measurement of every provider or of the case-study hero.

Stale cached video files
The author describes a production failure after an updated, re-encoded, fragmented video was deployed under the same filename as an older cached file. Returning visitors received the stale version, which was incompatible with Media Source, and the hero failed. The reported fix was to change the asset filename so the new resource no longer collided with the cached copy. This is a project-specific cache incident, not a guarantee that renaming alone resolves every CDN or browser caching problem.

How should you handle accessibility and page purpose?
The author reports measuring text contrast pixel by pixel across the moving film, with a worst-case ratio of 8.76:1. The author also reports that prerendered page text remained readable with JavaScript disabled. These are claims about that project, not the results of a third-party accessibility audit. For your own page, make sure text remains legible over every frame and that essential information is available without relying on the animation.
The case-study author recommends the effect for portfolios, venues, or product launches, but not for a business page whose main job is answering a question and taking a booking. That is a useful design judgment rather than a universal rule: atmosphere can help introduce a brand, while a task-focused page should make its next action immediately clear.
When is a scroll-scrubbed hero the right choice?

The case study does not provide controlled benchmarks comparing these approaches, nor a measured comparison between self-hosted video and third-party embeds. Choose based on the page’s purpose, the media’s loading cost, and whether the effect adds information or merely delays access to it.
