If the Windows 11 26H2 update is not showing, it does not necessarily mean Windows Update is broken. Microsoft began a controlled, phased rollout on September 29, 2026, so availability depends on your device’s eligibility and readiness. Check the latest-updates setting, your current Windows version, and any safeguard-hold message before trying to force the upgrade.
Why Windows 11 26H2 is not showing in Windows Update
Microsoft announced general availability for Windows 11, version 26H2, on September 29, 2026, but said it would expand the rollout over the following months. That means the update may not yet be offered to every eligible PC. Microsoft says eligible Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 devices can receive it sooner when Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available is enabled. The offer still depends on whether the device is ready.
- Phased availability: Microsoft has not yet offered the update to your device.
- Eligibility or servicing prerequisite: Your device is not on a supported starting version or lacks a required cumulative update.
- Safeguard hold: Microsoft is temporarily withholding the update because of a compatibility concern.
- Organization policy: A work or school administrator controls when the feature update is deployed.
Microsoft describes its rollout as a “controlled feature rollout” intended to use compatibility and quality data. See its Windows 11 2026 Update announcement and the Windows 11 26H2 release-health page for the current status.
Check the update setting and your installed version
Enable early access to the latest updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update.
- Turn on Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available.
- Select Check for updates and see whether 26H2 is offered.
This setting lets an eligible device receive the update sooner; it does not override a compatibility hold or guarantee that the offer will appear immediately.

Confirm your starting version and servicing level
Microsoft’s enablement-package guidance identifies Windows 11 24H2 and 25H2 as the source versions for 26H2. It also lists the September 22, 2026 KB5124010 Preview cumulative update, or a later cumulative update, as a prerequisite. Install available Windows updates and check again. You can see your version by opening Settings > System > About and looking under Windows specifications. Read Microsoft’s KB5124010 support article for update details.
Microsoft says 24H2, 25H2, and 26H2 share a common core and servicing branch. The enablement package activates features already present in monthly updates and can be delivered through Windows Update or WSUS as part of the feature update; it is not a separate consumer purchase.

Read the Windows Update message for a safeguard hold
If Windows Update says the upgrade is on its way but is not ready for your device, Microsoft says one or more safeguard holds may be active. These holds are used when compatibility data indicates a problem that could cause an update to fail, roll back, or create a poor experience. Select Learn More in Windows Update to see any device-specific summary.
A hold can remain until Microsoft investigates the issue, validates a fix, and releases the protection. Repeatedly checking for updates or attempting to force an installation will not resolve the underlying compatibility issue. Microsoft recommends waiting for the hold to be released rather than manually updating.

Microsoft documents disabling safeguards as an IT validation measure, not a routine fix for a personal PC. Turning off the protection can expose a device to known performance problems and does not guarantee that installation will succeed. Check for current 26H2 known issues
Known issues and mitigations can change during a rollout, so consult Microsoft’s 26H2 release-health page for the latest information. As of October 2, 2026, Microsoft listed an issue in which some applications that require AC-3 (Dolby Digital) audio decoding may close unexpectedly after the September 22, 2026 update or later; Microsoft said it was working on a resolution in a future update.

The same page reported that USB audio, domain trust, and virtual-desktop sign-in issues had been mitigated on September 29, 2026. Those statuses are time-sensitive and may have changed since that date.

If your organization manages the device, the administrator may control feature-update timing through update rings or deployment tools. Ask whether 26H2 has been approved and scheduled for your device. Microsoft says commercial and education customers can manage the rollout through existing tools, including Windows Autopatch and the Microsoft 365 admin center, and recommends targeted validation before broader deployment.

Administrators can use Windows Update for Business reports to inspect active safeguard holds and their eight-digit IDs, and consult the release-health dashboard for publicly documented issues. Microsoft also documents a GStatus registry value for advanced hold diagnostics: in the specified key, 0 indicates a hold and 2 indicates no hold. Registry inspection is an administrative diagnostic, not a first troubleshooting step for ordinary users.
If 26H2 still does not appear
- Verify that your PC is running Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2 and has the required cumulative updates, including KB5124010 Preview or a later cumulative update.
- Confirm that Get the latest updates as soon as they’re available is enabled under Settings > Windows Update.
- Check the exact Windows Update message and use Learn More if it says the upgrade is not ready.
- Review the current 26H2 release-health page for active compatibility issues or mitigations.
- If the device is managed, contact your organization’s administrator about the deployment schedule.
If there is a safeguard hold, wait for Microsoft to resolve the issue and release it. If there is no hold and your device meets the published prerequisites, the remaining explanation may simply be that the phased offer has not reached your PC yet.
