Its most frequently reported critical issue was hidden layout tables. Those numbers describe one reported sample and checker—not applicant tracking systems (ATS) in general—and the underlying study could not be independently verified.
What the 22,901-PDF summary reports
A ShortSingh search-result summary of a story attributed to OwlApply says a free resume checker analyzed 22,901 PDF resumes submitted between May and September 2026. The summary reports that 79.8% had at least one major or critical problem, while 5.8% had no layout issues. These are figures as reported by the summary, not independently confirmed results; the original story and underlying study were not accessible for verification. ShortSingh summary
The summary identifies hidden layout tables as the most common critical finding. It also lists decorative icons or emoji, non-standard fonts, non-standard section headings, and contact details in headers or footers as other reported concerns:

Every percentage in the table is attributed to the ShortSingh summary, which describes the work as associated with OwlApply. The summary says it is AI-generated. The original article’s full text, study methods, definition of “critical,” sample selection, parser identity, and validation were unavailable, so the figures cannot establish how often these issues occur across resumes generally. Why hidden layout tables may matter
A PDF can look orderly to a person while its text is stored or extracted in a different sequence. A parser may encounter elements according to their underlying order rather than their visible position, making a table-based layout a potential source of scrambled or misassociated text. That is a practical reason to inspect extracted text, not proof that every table causes a parsing failure.
The reported 32.7% figure is a finding attributed to one checker in one described sample. Because neither the checker’s methods nor the meaning of “hidden layout table” could be checked, it should not be read as a measured failure rate for ATS software. The available summary also does not demonstrate that avoiding tables guarantees a resume will parse successfully.

Other reported PDF parsing concerns
Icons and emoji
The summary reports decorative icons or emoji in 48.9% of the PDFs. Such symbols may not extract as the intended label or may interrupt nearby text, depending on how they are encoded and how a parser handles them. The summary does not document the specific symbols, extraction behavior, or whether each instance caused a problem.
Fonts and section headings
Non-standard fonts were reported in 46% of files, and non-standard section headings in 39.2%. The summary does not define either category or show that every unusual font or heading failed. As a cautious design choice, use selectable text and familiar labels such as “Experience,” “Education,” and “Skills” rather than relying on stylized typography or inventive section names.

Contact details in headers and footers
The summary says 22.1% had contact details in headers or footers that many parsers missed. Since parser behavior varies and the underlying evidence is unavailable, this is not a universal rule. Keeping essential contact information in the main document body makes it easier to verify that it appears in the extracted text.
How to check a resume PDF yourself
Compare what the document looks like with what its text layer contains. This is a practical check, not a guarantee of how a particular employer’s ATS will process the file.

- Inspect the visible page. Confirm that your name, contact information, headings, dates, employers, and bullet points are legible and in the intended order.
- Select and copy the text. Paste it into a plain-text editor or another simple text field. Check whether headings remain attached to the right content and whether dates, job titles, and bullets appear in a sensible sequence.
- Check essential details. Make sure your name and contact information are present in the copied text, not only in a header, footer, graphic, or icon.
- Fix extraction problems and export again. If text is missing or jumbled, simplify the layout, use ordinary text for labels, and recreate the PDF. Repeat the visual and copy-and-paste checks on the new file.
OwlApply’s official homepage describes its resume checker as scoring resumes from 0 to 100 across formatting, content quality, keyword density, and section completeness; it also describes a resume builder. Those are vendor descriptions of its products, not independent verification of the reported analysis or evidence that its checker predicts results in every ATS. OwlApply
