For simple key-value text, PowerShell’s ConvertFrom-StringData can turn lines into a hashtable. A conventional INI file with sections needs extra handling: the cmdlet is not a complete section-aware INI parser. If you rewrite a file after parsing it, comments, ordering, whitespace, and other formatting may be lost unless your script deliberately preserves them.
Choose an approach for your file
| Approach | Useful when | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
Get-Content with ConvertFrom-StringData |
The input is simple key-value text, or you have already isolated one section. | It does not parse section headers or guarantee compatibility with every INI dialect. Comment and backslash handling can affect values. Microsoft documents the cmdlet’s input and behavior. |
Text processing with Get-Content and Set-Content |
You know the application’s small, specific INI dialect and need a script that can run beyond Windows. | A rewrite replaces file content. Your implementation must account for comments, key ordering, duplicate keys, encoding, and line endings if those need to survive. Get-Content reference; Set-Content reference. |
| Windows profile APIs | A Windows-only task needs classic section-and-key access. | These are compatibility APIs, not universal parsers for arbitrary INI formats; Windows may map some INI references to the registry. GetPrivateProfileString; WritePrivateProfileStringW. |
PowerShell’s powershell.config.json |
You are configuring PowerShell itself. | This is JSON, not INI, and should not be used as a general INI-file method. PowerShell configuration reference. |
Read a key-value block with ConvertFrom-StringData
Use this for straightforward lines such as Server = example and Port = 443. The following example parses an already-extracted block; it does not locate a section inside a complete INI file.
$text = @'
Server = example
Port = 443
'@
$settings = ConvertFrom-StringData -StringData $text
$settings.Server
The result is a hashtable, so you can retrieve a value by key. The cmdlet’s default separator is =. Its -Delimiter parameter is available in PowerShell 7 and later. Lines are treated as comments only when # is the first non-whitespace character; inline comments are not documented as supported. Backslashes may be interpreted as escape sequences, so a Windows path may need escaping to retain literal backslashes. Check the cmdlet’s documentation against the file’s actual syntax.
Read a whole file or one section
By default, Get-Content returns content line by line. Use -Raw when you need the entire file as one string:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
$text = Get-Content -Path .settings.ini -Raw
That gives you the text to inspect or process; it does not convert section headers into a structured INI object. For a sectioned file, your script must recognize the relevant header and isolate its key-value lines before passing those lines to ConvertFrom-StringData, or use another method suited to the application’s dialect. INI conventions vary, so decide explicitly how your file handles comments, repeated keys, whitespace, and values containing the delimiter.
Update values without accidentally losing file details
Set-Content replaces the content at its destination. Parsing a file into values and writing a newly constructed file can therefore discard comments, original key order, spacing, duplicate keys, line endings, or encoding. If those details matter, edit the original text selectively rather than reconstructing it from a hashtable, and verify that your implementation preserves the conventions your application expects.

- Keep a backup or retain the original text before writing.
- Test against a representative file, including any unusual comments, duplicate keys, and non-ASCII characters that may occur in production.
- Confirm how the target application interprets the updated file instead of assuming all INI readers use the same rules.
See Microsoft’s references for Get-Content and Set-Content for their file input and output behavior.
Use Windows profile APIs only for compatible Windows tasks
Windows provides GetPrivateProfileString to retrieve a value for a section and key, and WritePrivateProfileStringW to write a value. The read function can enumerate section names or key names when the corresponding name argument is null. Section and key comparisons are case-insensitive, and quoted values have their quote marks removed.

These functions have important boundaries. Microsoft describes GetPrivateProfileString as compatibility support for 16-bit Windows applications and recommends the registry for application initialization information. In addition, Windows can use IniFileMapping to redirect some INI references so that values come from the registry rather than the file on disk. Use the APIs only when their behavior matches the application and file you need to manage; they do not promise support for every INI dialect. See Microsoft’s documentation for GetPrivateProfileString and WritePrivateProfileStringW.
Do not confuse INI files with PowerShell’s own configuration
PowerShell’s configuration file is named powershell.config.json and uses JSON, not INI. PowerShell loads it at startup; invalid JSON can prevent an interactive session from starting. Unrecognized keys or invalid values are ignored. These rules apply to PowerShell’s own configuration, not to arbitrary application INI files. Consult Microsoft’s PowerShell configuration documentation before editing it.
