Yes—GitHub Copilot has a free plan for eligible personal accounts in VS Code. As listed in GitHub’s individual-plan comparison accessed October 5, 2026, Copilot Free includes up to 2,000 inline suggestions, 50 chat interactions, and 50 premium requests per month. Those are three separate limits, not interchangeable counts. If you want free chat without Copilot, VS Code also supports local models and bring-your-own-key (BYOK) providers, but they do not provide every Copilot feature.
What does Copilot Free include in 2026?
GitHub’s current individual-plan comparison lists these monthly Copilot Free allowances, accessed October 5, 2026:
| Allowance | Free plan limit | What it applies to |
|---|---|---|
| Inline suggestions | Up to 2,000 per month | Code completions shown inline while you work |
| Chat interactions | Up to 50 per month | Copilot chat interactions |
| Premium requests | Up to 50 per month | Requests counted in the premium-request category; this is not the same unit as a chat interaction |
The figures are ceilings, not a promise that every feature or model is available in every account or organization. GitHub describes Free as intended for personal use. It is unavailable to people already covered by an organization or enterprise Copilot seat and certain existing subscriptions or trials. Verified students have a separate free plan, while teachers and qualifying open-source maintainers may be eligible for free Pro access; these offers are not benefits everyone can combine. Check the eligibility details on the live plan page.
The free tier was announced in VS Code in December 2024 with 2,000 code completions and 50 chat requests a month. That announcement is useful historical context, not a current model-entitlement list: use GitHub’s live plan comparison for today’s limits rather than assuming launch-era model names or terminology still apply. The VS Code announcement also reflects the earlier phrasing of the quotas.

How are suggestions, chats, premium requests, and credits different?
Inline suggestions
Inline suggestions are completions offered in the editor as you write code. They have their own monthly allowance. Reaching that allowance does not, by itself, mean chat is also exhausted.
Chat interactions and premium requests
GitHub’s plan comparison lists up to 50 chat interactions and, separately, up to 50 premium requests for Free. Do not add them together or treat either as a count of every possible prompt: the labels refer to distinct usage categories. The billing documentation explains the current usage terminology.

AI credits
GitHub’s usage-based billing documentation defines one AI credit as US$0.01. Credit use depends on token volume and the selected model, so a short exchange on a lighter model and a long multi-file agent session can have different costs. A credit allowance therefore does not translate into a fixed number of prompts. GitHub’s billing language and plan displays are evolving; consult the live billing page when comparing credits with request counts.
That documentation lists paid individual plans as Pro at US$10 per month with 1,500 total monthly AI credits, Pro+ at US$39 per month with 7,000, and Max at US$100 per month with 20,000. These are figures in GitHub’s individual usage-based billing table accessed October 5, 2026; they are not free-plan limits. GitHub also displays premium-request counts in plan comparisons, so keep each page’s stated unit and date attached when evaluating an upgrade.

What happens when a monthly allowance runs out?
GitHub says included AI credits do not roll over. The billing page says they reset at 00:00 UTC on the first day of each calendar month. VS Code’s Copilot FAQ says inline-suggestion and AI-credit allowances reset monthly, and reaching one allowance does not automatically disable the other feature category. Check your current consumption in the Copilot status dashboard; availability and behavior for a specific account should be confirmed there and in the current plan terms.
Can you use another free AI assistant in VS Code?
Yes. VS Code documents multiple agent harnesses—including GitHub Copilot, Claude Code, and Codex—and separates the choice of harness, model, and execution location. The harness determines how work runs in the workspace and how it requests approval; the provider, account, and administrator policies can affect which models and features are available. See VS Code’s agent overview and agent tools documentation.

| Route | What it can offer | Important constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Copilot Free | Copilot’s eligible free-plan features, including inline suggestions and chat within separate limits | Eligibility and monthly allowances apply; confirm current terms on GitHub’s plan page |
| BYOK provider | Chat and agentic coding using a compatible provider without a Copilot plan | Provider access, cost, model availability, and feature coverage depend on that service and its terms |
| Local model | Chat that can work without a GitHub account or internet connection, depending on setup | Local models do not currently provide VS Code inline suggestions; capabilities differ from Copilot |
VS Code documents BYOK and local-model options, including local models such as Ollama. These approaches may suit someone who mainly wants chat or offline experimentation. They are not feature-for-feature replacements: inline suggestions, semantic search, and features relying on embeddings still require GitHub Copilot service access, and VS Code documents no local-model route for inline suggestions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How should you compare assistants for coding?
There is no standardized head-to-head benchmark in the cited documentation that establishes one assistant as universally better. Compare the setup against your actual work rather than treating a plan label or model name as a performance result.

- Cost and limits: Check eligibility, suggestion quotas, chat or request limits, credit rules, and any overage controls.
- Model access: Confirm which models are supported by the chosen harness and account, and whether an administrator restricts them. Reasoning capability, speed, and context limits can vary. VS Code’s model documentation describes availability and selection.
- Workflow: Decide whether you need inline completion, chat, edits across files, agent tools, or control over where commands and changes execute.
- Provider independence and offline use: BYOK or a local model can reduce reliance on a Copilot plan, but feature coverage is not identical.
- Data and control: Review provider terms, account rules, telemetry settings, workspace trust, and approval requirements before sharing code or allowing tools to act.
What should you check before letting an assistant work on code?
Review telemetry and provider data terms
VS Code says telemetry is currently enabled by default in the free version of GitHub Copilot. Its Copilot setup documentation explains how to turn off VS Code telemetry or adjust Copilot settings. Telemetry preferences and an AI provider’s handling of prompts and code are separate matters: review both, along with any workplace rules, before sending private or proprietary code.
Inspect agent actions and edits
An agent may edit project files and request approval for terminal commands or other tools. Inspect the changed-file summary or source-control diff before accepting the result. Stopping a request does not undo edits already completed, so restore unwanted changes explicitly. VS Code’s agent-mode tutorial covers the interaction and review workflow.
