For a DOS-focused collection, start with DOS Games; for an index spanning arcade, DOS, and Flash, try Arcade.gs; for retro BASIC-style games, explore E3RC’s 101 BASIC Computer Games. These directories differ in what they preserve and how they launch games, so check the individual game page: a catalog listing does not guarantee a working browser launch or a particular set of controls.

Which browser game directory should you use?

Directory What it covers What to expect
DOS Games A community preservation archive focused on DOS games. Its site says entries marked “Playable” run in a browser without an emulator installation or download. Other catalogued games may not have playable builds. The site describes Roland MT-32 and SC-55 emulation, disc swapping, gamepad support, and keyboard rebinding; compatibility was not independently tested.
Arcade.gs An index grouping Internet Archive games into arcade, DOS, and Flash categories. The Arcade.gs page showed 11,678 games in an October 2026 snapshot. That is a dynamic, page-reported figure, not an audited count or a guarantee that each listing launches.
E3RC’s 101 BASIC Computer Games Browser-based reimplementations based on David H. Ahl’s 1973 book. The project README reports 106 terminal-style games across categories such as board, card, puzzle, simulation, strategy, sports, and word games. It is a focused collection of reimplementations, not a general archive of original arcade or DOS game binaries.

What each directory offers

DOS Games: check the Playable label

DOS Games distinguishes games it has preserved from those it has made playable. The site says, “Anything marked Playable runs straight in your browser, with no emulator to install and nothing to download.” Treat that as the site’s description; the individual title page is the place to confirm current access.

In an October 2026 page snapshot, DOS Games showed 8 preserved titles and 8 catalogued. These are site-reported counts at that time, not a stable total or an independent count. The site says playing is free and that ads and optional Supporter memberships fund its servers.

Arcade.gs: browse by game type

Arcade.gs describes its listings as games distributed via the Internet Archive and groups them into arcade, DOS, and Flash. Its October 2026 page snapshot showed 11,678 games total. Because the index is dynamic and the scope differs from other collections, that figure should not be used as a direct measure of which directory has more usable games.

101 BASIC Computer Games: a focused browser reimplementation

The E3RC project README describes 106 browser-based, terminal-style games reimplemented from David H. Ahl’s 1973 book 101 BASIC Computer Games. Its examples span several game types, including educational and word games as well as strategy and simulation. The README points to the Internet Archive and Brandeis University digital collections as sources for the original book.

The project labels itself a non-commercial fan project. Its reported 106 implementations are not an independent count of games confirmed to work, and that description does not establish the rights status of every underlying game or piece of content.

How to check whether a game will work for you

  1. Open the individual game page. A directory entry can be a catalog record rather than a playable build. Look for a clear playable status or launch option before settling in to play.
  2. Confirm how it launches. Do not assume every listing runs in a browser just because the directory contains browser-playable games. Check whether that specific title requires a download or another client.
  3. Check the controls. The controls can vary by directory and game. DOS Games describes keyboard rebinding and gamepad support, but that does not guarantee a particular controller or browser will work with every title.
  4. Recheck current availability. Launch behavior and catalog listings can change. A count on a directory page is a snapshot, not a promise that all listed games are playable today.

Free access and game rights are different questions

DOS Games says its games are free to play and that advertising and optional memberships help fund its servers. Arcade.gs describes its listings as distributed via the Internet Archive. Neither statement establishes the copyright, license, or authorized distribution status of every individual game. “Free to play,” “archived,” and “abandonware” do not mean the same thing as public domain or permission to distribute. Rights and availability need to be considered title by title.

What the catalog counts do—and don’t—tell you

The counts reported by these projects describe different things: a DOS preservation archive’s preserved and catalogued titles, an index’s broad total across arcade, DOS, and Flash categories, and a project’s reported number of browser reimplementations. They come from the sites themselves, are not audited totals, and do not establish that a given number of games can currently be launched. Use them as rough descriptions of scope, not as a ranking.
