1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteIn 85 minutes, you can build a compact baseline for noticing when a website’s observable behavior changes on shared hosting. This workshop’s five-probe floor card checks DNS, TCP, TLS, HTTP(S), and repeated or multi-location results. It is a practical operating aid—not a standardized monitoring set—and a changed result is a reason to investigate, not proof that your host caused the change.
What this floor card can—and cannot—tell you
A scheduled check observes a particular protocol, target, location, and success rule. It does not continuously inspect every part of a website. Public HTTP(S) checks can test status codes or required response content, but Google Cloud notes that its uptime checks do not load page assets or run JavaScript by default, and the default configuration does not include authentication. Google Cloud’s uptime-check documentation explains those boundaries.
“Shared-host drift” is the workshop’s name for a change in what your checks observe while the site runs on shared hosting. DNS answers, connection reachability, certificate status, page responses, or results across time and locations can change for different reasons. These probes provide evidence about the symptom; they do not identify its cause or establish that the hosting provider changed something.
Build the five-probe floor card
Choose a stable hostname and URL, decide what counts as success for each check, and record the date, time, target, location, result, and relevant settings. Keep this first observation as your baseline. Use the same target and rules for later comparisons.

1. DNS resolution
Record whether the hostname resolves and the returned address set. A failure to resolve or a changed set is worth checking against your intended DNS configuration, but the observation alone does not explain why the answer changed. Uptime.com lists DNS among its monitoring check types. Uptime.com’s monitoring overview provides an example of this capability.
2. TCP reachability
Check whether the service port you depend on accepts a connection—for a website, typically the relevant web-service port. Google Cloud supports public TCP uptime checks configured with a port. A successful connection shows that the port accepted a connection from that checker; it does not show that the application returned a usable page. Google Cloud’s uptime-check documentation describes TCP checks.

3. TLS certificate
For an HTTPS site, record whether the certificate is valid and when it expires. DigitalOcean documents certificate-expiration monitoring for HTTPS checks, and Google Cloud describes certificate validation and checks that can fail for invalid certificates. DigitalOcean’s uptime-alert guide and Google Cloud’s documentation describe these behaviors.
4. HTTP(S) response
Request a stable public URL or health path. Record the status code and, if useful, a short expected phrase or other required response content. Google Cloud supports status and content criteria and follows redirects. Its checks do not load assets or execute JavaScript by default, so a passing response does not guarantee that a browser can render the complete site or that a logged-in workflow works. Google Cloud’s uptime-check documentation details the check options and limits.

- 5v power through USB3 port or 5v wall transformer (or both). ~500ma consumption.
5. Repeat or compare locations
Repeat the same check over time, compare results from more than one location, or do both. This can reveal an intermittent symptom or one observed in only some places. Google Cloud describes multi-location checks; DigitalOcean documents regional latency and a global metric. Neither pattern proves a shared-host cause. Google Cloud’s documentation and DigitalOcean’s guide describe their respective options.

- Minutes 0–10: Choose the target. Select the hostname, a stable public URL or health path, and the service port to observe. Note whether the page is public or requires authentication; a default public uptime check may not be able to test an authenticated page.
- Minutes 10–25: Set success rules. Decide what counts as a DNS answer, which TCP port should accept connections, which HTTPS certificate state and expiry you will record, and which HTTP status or response content is expected. Avoid changing several targets or rules at once.
- Minutes 25–45: Capture the baseline. Run the five checks and write down timestamps, targets, locations, settings, and results. Save the observed DNS addresses, certificate details, HTTP status and content result, and TCP outcome.
- Minutes 45–60: Add repetition or locations. Schedule recurring checks or compare locations if your monitoring service supports them. The vendors differ: Google Cloud’s public uptime checks require at least three checkers, while DigitalOcean documents four selectable regions. Those are product-specific configurations, not universal minimums.
- Minutes 60–75: Set alert rules. Choose a failure threshold, retry or sensitivity behavior, and a route for alerts. DigitalOcean documents downtime, latency-threshold, and SSL-expiry alerts; Uptime.com describes sensitivity and retry settings. Select rules that prompt investigation without treating one observation as a diagnosis.
- Minutes 75–85: Verify and preserve the card. Confirm that checks target the intended hostname and URL, that alerts reach the intended destination, and that the baseline is saved where you can compare it later. Note any probe you could not configure and its blind spot.
Interpret a change without over-attributing it
Compare a new observation with the baseline under the same target, location, and success rule. A single failed probe identifies what that checker did not observe successfully; it does not establish the responsible component. Use the pattern across probes and repeat observations to decide what to inspect next.
- DNS differs or fails: Compare the returned address set with the DNS configuration you expect and check whether subsequent observations agree.
- TCP fails while DNS resolves: The hostname resolved, but the selected port did not accept that checker’s connection. The result does not establish whether the cause is the service, network path, or another condition.
- TLS fails or expiry is near: Inspect the certificate state and expiry date. A certificate failure can prevent a check from passing even when a server responds.
- TCP succeeds but HTTP(S) fails: The port accepted a connection, but the HTTP(S) rule was not satisfied. Check the status and required content against the expected response.
- Only some locations or times fail: Preserve the location and timestamp with each result. The difference may be geographically limited or intermittent, but it does not by itself identify shared hosting as the cause.
Decide whether to add an ICMP ping
Ping is optional and should not be treated as a substitute for the five checks without deciding what information you would lose. Google Cloud supports up to three optional ICMP pings per check as a troubleshooting aid; DigitalOcean also documents IPv4 ICMP checks. Availability depends on the monitoring service and network conditions, so a ping may be unavailable or blocked. If you use it, record it as an additional observation rather than proof that the website itself is healthy.

Choose monitoring features around the question you need answered
When selecting a service, compare the actual check types and settings you need—not just a claim that a site is monitored. The cited vendor documentation illustrates different capabilities, not a full product comparison.
- Protocols: Check whether it supports the HTTP(S), TCP, DNS, or ICMP probes you plan to use.
- Location coverage: Confirm where checks run and how many locations can be selected or are required. Vendor-specific counts are not universal standards.
- Response validation and TLS: Look for status or content criteria, redirect handling, certificate validation, and expiry alerts if those matter to your site.
- Cadence and alert behavior: Review interval, retry or sensitivity settings, latency history, and available alert destinations.
- Access constraints: Check whether the monitor can reach the target without authentication. A public check with no authentication will not validate private pages or authenticated workflows.
Google Cloud documents public HTTP(S) and TCP uptime checks, DigitalOcean documents HTTP(S), ICMP, and regional latency options, and Uptime.com lists DNS and other check types. Consult each service’s documentation for the specific configuration available to your account and target.
