Stellantis says no human driver was aboard. This was a modified Indy Autonomous Challenge car running on a dedicated runway—not a standard retail Maserati or a public-road self-driving test.
How fast did the self-driving Maserati go?
The Indy Autonomous Challenge Maserati MC20 Coupé reached 197.7 mph (318 km/h), according to Stellantis’ March 2025 announcement. The run took place on March 3, 2025, at the Space Florida Launch and Landing Facility runway in Cape Canaveral, Florida, during 1000 Miglia Experience Florida. Stellantis says the car had no human driver on board.
The runway is described by Stellantis as 15,000 feet (2.8 miles) long. That space allowed a high-speed demonstration in a controlled setting; the result does not show how the system performs in ordinary traffic or on public roads.
What kind of record was it?
Stellantis presented 197.7 mph as surpassing the previous autonomous-car speed record: 192.8 mph, achieved by an Indy Autonomous Challenge AV-21 at the same facility in April 2022. These are records reported by the organizations involved. The official accounts cited here do not identify an independent certifying body or record-certification protocol, so the result is best described as a reported record rather than an independently certified one.

The figures describe different vehicles, venues, dates and categories. In particular, the 177 mph MC20 result was labelled a production-car category record by Stellantis; the 2025 runway run was reported as an overall autonomous-car speed record. The Indianapolis figures refer to racetrack performance, not a runway speed record.

Stellantis says high-speed autonomous racing can serve as a test environment for technology that may inform future road cars. That is the company’s stated rationale, not evidence that this particular demonstration validates consumer-ready autonomous driving. A controlled high-speed run on a long runway tests a narrower situation than the changing conditions and interactions involved in public-road driving.

What the record does—and does not—show
- It shows: an AI-driven, modified MC20 reached a reported 197.7 mph on a dedicated runway without a human driver aboard, according to Stellantis.
- It does not establish: that a standard retail MC20 can drive itself, that the system is available to consumers, or that it can safely handle ordinary public-road conditions.
- It is not directly comparable to: the 2024 Indianapolis racetrack top-speed and overtake results, or the MC20’s separately described 2024 production-car category record.
