Groundtruth is a free, offline Windows ledger for small microgreens farms that want to connect tray work, customer orders, and money records without putting farm data in a cloud account. It may suit a solo grower replacing a spreadsheet, but its early 0.1.x status, unsigned Windows installer, and one-computer design are important trade-offs.
What is Groundtruth?
Groundtruth is a Windows desktop app described by its publisher as a farm ledger for small microgreens growers. Its workflow is built around sowing trays, harvesting by weight, selling to customers, and keeping records of the work and money in one place. The project describes the app as free and says it does not require an account, subscription, or cloud service; farm data stays on the computer unless the user exports it. Groundtruth’s official repository is the source for its product description and documented scope.
“Local-first” here has a practical meaning: Groundtruth stores its farm records in a folder on the Windows machine rather than relying on a hosted account for routine use. The repository says that folder contains a database, an append-only event log, receipt files, and automatic snapshots. This gives the grower a local data location to manage, but it also means the farmer—not a cloud sync service—must plan how to protect and move the farm folder.
What can it track instead of a spreadsheet?

The project says the software is meant to surface late, short, or broken conditions rather than guess at them. That is a stated design intent, not an independently verified assessment of how well the app detects every problem. Groundtruth is not presented as a multi-user team system, phone-first tool, cloud-sync platform, general farm ERP, CRM, or accounting package. Those exclusions matter if a spreadsheet is currently doing several jobs beyond tray and order tracking. The repository’s feature and scope notes describe these workflows and limitations.
Installing Groundtruth on Windows
The described installer targets Windows x64 and is intended to install for a normal user without administrator permission. The installer is unsigned, however, so Windows may show a warning. The project provides instructions for proceeding, but an unsigned installer is still a trust decision: download only from the official project source, review the publisher’s guidance, and do not override a warning if you cannot verify that you have the intended file.

Building from source is a more technical route. The project lists Windows, Node.js, Rust, Visual Studio Build Tools with the C++ desktop workload, and WebView2 as requirements; it says there is no Mac or Linux build. The project’s installation documentation is the appropriate place to check current installer and build instructions.
Data safety, upgrades, and project maturity
Groundtruth is described as an early 0.1.x release for one machine and one user. The publisher reports that the integrity core is built and tested, but says the full recovery drill for a dead laptop has not been run end to end. It recommends keeping the old machine or a USB copy after a move. This is a project-reported status, not an independent recovery test.

The project also warns that an upgrade can change the farm file such that an older build may refuse to open it. Before upgrading, follow the README’s advice to copy the entire farm folder. Because the data is local, it is sensible to treat a separate copy as part of normal recordkeeping rather than assume the application’s automatic snapshots replace an off-machine backup. Groundtruth vs. a browser-based microgreens tracker
Microgreen Tracker by On The Grow is a browser-based alternative. Its official page describes crop and variety guidance, tray stages, schedule calculations, watering reminders, succession planting, harvest and yield logs, inventory, customer orders, and export. It supports signed-in access across devices and offers collaborator seat tiers. As of October 5, 2026, the page lists a seven-day trial followed by paid subscriptions; plan terms can change, so check the current page before committing. These tools address overlapping but different needs. A solo grower prioritizing an offline, local ledger may prefer Groundtruth’s model if they are comfortable managing backups and the installer warning. A grower who needs browser access on multiple devices, collaborator seats, or more explicit crop-scheduling features may find the tracker’s approach a closer fit. Neither set of features alone establishes which product is better for a particular farm.

Groundtruth centers its workflow on trays, but the software description does not require a particular tray size. Virginia Cooperative Extension lists 1020 propagation trays among microgreens production systems, making that a relevant equipment category for growers setting up tray production—not a Groundtruth compatibility requirement.
