Researchers have reported a way to form metal-rich composites at ambient temperature and pressure: chitosan, a molecule associated with arthropod cuticle, helps aggregate suspended metal particles as water moves through the material. The method is not conventional forging or melting, and it does not mean that metal can be shaped this way in every setting.
How can metal be worked at room temperature?
In conventional metalworking, heat is often used to melt or soften metal before shaping it. The 2024 method takes a different route. The researchers start with colloidal suspensions of metals—small metal particles dispersed in liquid—and use chitosan to bring those particles together into a solid composite. Water exchange drives the process, which the authors report takes place at ambient temperature and pressure. University of Birmingham research record
The abstract does not give a precise numeric temperature or a complete recipe. This is therefore a description of a research method, not instructions for reproducing it at home.
What do insects and crab shells have to do with it?
The biological connection is chitosan, derived from arthropod cuticle. The team uses this cuticle-associated molecule to aggregate metal colloids. SUTD’s account frames the inspiration more broadly through shell-forming organisms, including insects and lobsters. The process borrows a material principle; it should not be understood as duplicating the complete way an insect or crab grows its shell. SUTD research-news account

Is the resulting material really metal?
The authors report composites containing more than 99.5% metal and describe them as electrically conductive, while also reporting affinity for biological components. That percentage is the study’s reported composition for its materials—not a general figure for all metals or a claim that the composites behave like ordinary metal stock in every application. The team demonstrated printing and casting functional forms, as well as transferring metallic characteristics into other biomaterials. These are research demonstrations. The cited material does not establish suitability for structural loads, long-term durability, broad industrial scalability, or equivalence to conventionally manufactured metal.

What the study establishes—and what it does not
- Established: a chitosan-mediated way to aggregate colloidal metal suspensions into composites, with water exchange driving formation under reported ambient conditions.
- Reported results: metal content above 99.5%, electrical conductivity, affinity for biological components, and demonstrations involving printed and cast forms.
- Not established by the cited reports: a quantified energy-saving percentage, quantified lifecycle benefit, industrial readiness, or a complete consumer-use protocol.
Associate Professor Javier G. Fernandez described the motivation in SUTD’s account: “Unlike our society’s energy-intensive engineering, nature operates under a paradigm of scarcity and finds solutions without access to intense energy sources or transport of materials.” This is the inspiration behind the research, not a measured claim that the process has a particular environmental benefit.
