What the 95% figure means
The 95% is 19 first-action reads in 20 trials in one pre-change condition, not a general statistic about Goose, 27B models, or coding agents. The report describes Goose as summarizing older conversation messages after a token threshold, then hiding those earlier messages from the agent while leaving them in the session transcript. The author’s concern is that summarization can discard useful tool activity, including shell requests, file contents returned by tools, and test output.
The measurements come from Mihai Perdum’s account, not an independent audit. The available article extracts do not establish an exact publication date. The DEV Community article describes the implementation and setup; a copy of the article reports the comparison counts and prompt lengths.
What the three conditions showed
The author compared three approaches, with 20 samples per condition. “First action” means the model’s first action after compaction; it does not measure every action or the success of a full coding task.

These are small-sample counts from the reported test. The third condition had the longest prompt, so the comparison cannot rule out an effect from prompt length. The prose-summary condition included the same file bytes as the retained-tail condition but had results closer to the pre-change condition. The author suggests that original message position may matter, but the experiment did not measure why.
Why preserving tool-message order could matter
A tool exchange is more than its text content: it includes a request and the corresponding response in a particular place in the conversation. The proposed compaction change summarizes older messages and then appends a recent tail in its original form. That is different from merely copying file contents into summary prose.

The author warns that a simple fixed-offset cutoff can start the retained tail on a tool response, leaving it without the request that produced it. The described implementation moves the cutoff backward when needed so that the associated request remains in the tail. It also avoids adding a preserved user message twice if that message is already included.
What the proposed setting does—and what it does not establish
The report describes a setting named GOOSE_COMPACT_KEEP_TAIL for retaining a recent message tail during compaction. A value of zero is intended to preserve the old behavior, according to the author. The author also reports comparing serialized outputs after normalizing timestamps; that is a reported check, not independent verification.

No official Goose documentation, release note, or repository source was established in the available material. Treat the setting name and implementation as specific to the author’s account, and check the Goose fork and version you use before relying on it. Its presence or behavior in other installations is not established.
How far to trust the result
- Narrow model and setup: The test used one local model, Qwen3.6-27B-Fable-Fusion-711 Heretic NEO MAX MTP at Q8_0, served with llama.cpp’s llama-server. The host was a Mac Studio M3 Ultra with 96 GB of memory. These are replication details, not requirements for using Goose or a claim that other setups will behave the same way.
- Limited sample: Each of the three conditions had 20 trials, which is too small to treat the percentages as stable rates across workloads.
- Prompt-length confound: The retained-tail arm used 283 tokens, compared with 159 and 217 in the other arms. The report does not isolate message position from prompt length.
- Incomplete validation: The author says a registered run-level test comparing rereads in a post-compaction swarm run had not yet been run. The experiment therefore does not prove an improvement to full coding runs.
- Unverified generality: The comparison did not test a frontier model, other model sizes, other compaction implementations, or a range of tasks.
What to check if your agent rereads a file
For a reader investigating the same symptom, the report points to conversation context as one place to inspect: determine whether compaction kept the relevant tool request and response, rather than only a prose summary or an incomplete slice of recent messages. If your Goose installation offers a tail-retention setting, verify its name and behavior against that specific fork and version. The reported counts are a reason to examine context handling, not proof that compaction is the cause in another setup.
