Its “practically indistinguishable from natural sight” phrase is the company’s description of its design goal—not a guarantee that every wearer or application will see a seamless, lifelike view. The series pairs high-resolution displays with camera passthrough, depth sensing and tracking; the model you choose depends especially on how much you need to see and interact with the physical environment.
What Varjo means by “indistinguishable from natural sight”
Varjo announced the XR-4 series on November 27, 2023, describing its goal as making mixed reality “practically indistinguishable from natural sight.” The phrase refers to the intended combination of display resolution, passthrough cameras, depth sensing and sensors. It is manufacturer positioning, not an independently measured result or a promise of identical experience across users, applications and conditions.
In mixed reality, a headset shows the wearer a computer-generated scene while also displaying camera views of the real surroundings. That can let a trainee see virtual elements alongside physical controls, instruments or equipment. The XR-4 is designed for professional training and simulation rather than presented by Varjo’s current product page as a mainstream consumer headset. Varjo describes uses across air, land and sea. - Resolution: 3840 × 3744 pixels per eye.
- Field of view: 120° × 105°.
- Pixel density: up to 51 pixels per degree.
In its November 27, 2023 launch announcement, Varjo also cited 200 nits brightness and 96% DCI-P3 color gamut. Those are launch-era claims and are not repeated on the current specification page. Varjo’s XR-4 launch announcement
The series page lists dual 20-megapixel cameras for passthrough, LiDAR rated at 300 kpix with a 7-meter range, an RGB ambient-light sensor, night mode, dynamic and custom masks, chroma-key compositing and hand occlusion. These are manufacturer specifications and feature descriptions; they do not establish independent image-quality measurements. Varjo XR-4 series
How the XR-4 models differ
Choose among the models based on the role of passthrough and any security constraints. The product line’s descriptions do not establish that every model has identical camera configurations or procurement conditions.
| Model | Varjo’s stated role | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|
| XR-4 | Virtual training | Standard model in the series. |
| XR-4 Focal Edition | Scenarios that need a close connection to the physical environment | Gaze-driven autofocus passthrough. |
| XR-4 Secure Edition | Secure or air-gapped settings | Designed to run offline; configurations can omit radio components. The Secure Edition page describes fixed-focus and autofocus configurations for different applications. |

What gaze-driven autofocus changes
Fixed-focus passthrough cameras must balance depth of field against the light reaching their sensors and the resolution they can capture, according to Varjo Technical Fellow Ville Timonen. For the Focal Edition, Varjo says gaze tracking runs at 200 Hz and combines with LiDAR depth information to focus the image around the wearer’s point of attention.

Timonen describes the intended effect this way: “Wherever you look you see an in-focus image and focusing is so quick that you never see it change.” This is Varjo’s technical explanation of its approach, not an independent comparison or guarantee of performance in every environment. What PC you need for an XR-4
The headset depends on a capable Windows PC, a supported NVIDIA GPU, DisplayPort and high-throughput USB. Varjo’s current desktop requirements separate minimum from best-performance configurations; demanding workloads need stronger hardware than lighter training or viewing. The company currently says AMD graphics cards are unsupported.
Among the requirements Varjo specifies are Windows 10 or 11, DisplayPort 1.4 or newer, USB-C supporting at least 10 Gbps connected directly to the chipset, and system memory ranging from 32 GB minimum to 64 GB for best performance. The supported NVIDIA GPU list differs by performance category, so these summary requirements are not enough to select a graphics card. Laptops have separate requirements and performance caveats, including GPU power limits.
Check the live requirements page before buying or configuring a workstation: supported hardware and software can change, and the correct setup depends on the workload. Varjo computer requirements

OpenXR support and application compatibility
Varjo announced OpenXR 1.0 conformance on September 26, 2024. The company said the Khronos test used OpenXR 1.0.34 and Varjo Base 4.3.0. That establishes a formal conformance milestone for the tested software and date; it does not guarantee that every application, feature or later software version will work without qualification. Check compatibility for the specific application and deployment. Varjo’s OpenXR conformance announcement
At launch in 2023, Varjo said more than 100 third-party PC applications and 3D engines supported its ecosystem, naming Unreal Engine, Unity, NVIDIA Omniverse and OpenUSD. The company also said over 25% of Fortune 100 companies used Varjo technology. Both figures are statements in that launch announcement, not current independently audited measures. Who the XR-4 is for—and what to check before choosing one
The XR-4 is aimed at organizations building high-fidelity training and simulation workflows that benefit from a PC-powered headset and a view blending digital content with the real environment. Varjo’s launch announcement quoted Loft Dynamics CEO and founder Fabi Riesen as saying that more than a thousand pilots had completed credited training and checking on Loft’s qualified flight simulation training device using a Varjo headset. That partner statement was about Loft’s device and Varjo headsets generally, not an XR-4-only total. Varjo’s November 27, 2023 announcement
- Start with the training task: standard virtual training, readable physical controls and gaze-focused passthrough, or secure offline use.
- Confirm the exact model’s passthrough configuration and any security or radio-component constraints.
- Check the application’s compatibility and tracking needs, including whether SteamVR tracking or optional controllers are part of the setup.
- Verify the current PC requirements against the intended workload and workstation configuration.
Varjo’s support FAQ once asked when the XR-4 would be available to consumers and referred to a 2024 timeline and waitlist. That is historical wording, not proof of current consumer availability.
