Keka is the best all-around 7-Zip alternative for Mac in the available evidence if you need to create as well as open 7z archives. Choose The Unarchiver if you mainly need to extract files. The key difference is archive creation: The Unarchiver’s official page confirms 7z extraction, while Keka’s Mac App Store listing explicitly includes 7Z in both its creation and extraction formats.
Which Mac archive app should you choose?
- Choose Keka to create and extract 7z archives, or if you want one app that also handles a broad range of other listed formats. Keka describes itself as a macOS file archiver and offers direct and Mac App Store distribution. Keka · Keka on the Mac App Store
- Choose The Unarchiver if your main job is opening archives you receive. Its official site lists 7z extraction support. The Unarchiver
- Consider BetterZip only after checking its current product details if you specifically want to compare paid Mac archive utilities. A third-party comparison names it as an alternative, but the available evidence does not establish its current features, macOS requirements, or price. Apps.Deals comparison
Keka vs. The Unarchiver
Do not treat “opens 7z files” and “creates 7z files” as interchangeable capabilities. If you need to package files in the 7Z format, look for an explicit creation-format list. Keka’s listing supplies that confirmation; The Unarchiver’s cited page confirms extraction.
| App | 7Z extraction | 7Z creation | What the cited source establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Keka | Yes | Yes | The Mac App Store listing includes 7Z in its supported extraction and compression formats. Its extraction list also names formats including ZIP, RAR, TAR, GZIP, BZIP2, XZ, ZSTD, ISO, and more; its creation list includes ZIP, TAR, ZSTD, GZIP, BZIP2, and AppleArchive. Pick based on what you do with archives
You need to make 7z files
Keka is the clearest choice among these two: its Mac App Store listing explicitly places 7Z in the formats it can create. That evidence matters if you are replacing 7-Zip’s compression workflow, not just its ability to unpack downloaded files.
You only need to open archives
The Unarchiver is a straightforward option when extraction is the requirement, including for 7z files. If you later need to create 7Z archives, choose a tool whose current documentation explicitly confirms that output format rather than assuming an extraction app can also create it.
