Most computers already have built-in audio hardware for ordinary wired headphones and speakers. Consider a separate sound card, USB DAC or headphone amplifier only if the built-in output is missing, noisy, too quiet for your headphones, lacks a connection or feature you need, or cannot support your recording setup. First check the selected output and driver; another device will not fix every sound problem.
What “sound card” means
The term can describe the audio hardware built into a computer, an internal add-on card, or an external USB audio device. Their basic playback job is similar: convert digital audio into an analog signal that headphones or speakers can play. Some devices also handle audio input, such as a microphone.
Built-in audio is enough for many everyday listening setups. Microsoft describes a codec in one Windows modern-standby platform that translates decoded digital streams into analog sound and drives built-in speakers or attached analog headphones; that specific architecture illustrates the function, not a guarantee that every computer is built the same way. Microsoft’s audio subsystem documentation explains that example.
When built-in audio is enough
For ordinary wired stereo headphones or powered speakers, connect to the computer’s appropriate audio output and select that output in the operating system. You do not need a separate PCIe sound card simply to hear sound.

Jack locations and layouts vary by computer and motherboard. On the board layouts covered in ASUS’s audio I/O guide, the lime-colored jack is used for headphones or two-channel speakers, while other jacks can support multichannel speaker configurations. Treat that as an example, and check your computer or motherboard manual for its actual ports.
What to check before buying anything
If your headphones or speakers produce no sound, rule out settings and device detection problems first. A new sound card may not help if Windows is sending audio to the wrong output or the existing device is disabled or missing its driver.

- Check the connection and volume. Confirm the headphones or speakers are connected to the intended jack, powered on if required, and not muted.
- Select the intended output. Open Windows sound settings and choose the connected headphones, speakers, or other audio output. ASUS’s guide shows output-device selection, though screens and software can differ by model and version: ASUS audio I/O guide.
- Check whether Windows detects the audio device. Open Device Manager and look under sound, video and game controllers. If the device is disabled and Windows offers an enable option, enable it. If it is absent, scan for hardware changes.
- Check the driver. If the driver is missing or incompatible, install the current driver from the PC or sound-card maker. Follow Microsoft’s audio troubleshooting guidance for your Windows version. Its support page notes that Windows 10 support ended on 14 October 2025, so instructions may vary by OS version.
When a separate audio device may be useful
Buy for a specific limitation or workflow—not just because a separate device sounds like an automatic upgrade. The right choice depends on the connection and output you need, whether headphones require more amplification, and whether you are listening or recording.

If the sound is noisy or crackles
First confirm the connection and selected output, then determine whether the noise occurs with the built-in output and the device you are using. An external DAC can move conversion outside the computer and may avoid some internal-noise problems, but it is not a guaranteed fix for every source of noise.

If headphones are too quiet
Check whether the output device has enough amplification for the headphones. A USB DAC may include an amplifier, but the category alone does not establish that it will drive your particular headphones adequately. Compare the device’s stated output and your headphone requirements rather than assuming any DAC will solve low volume.
If you need recording features
An audio interface is aimed at recording workflows, such as connecting microphones or instruments, adjusting input gain, using physical controls or monitoring a performance. It is not a prerequisite for listening through headphones or speakers. Focusrite notes that speakers are not required to use an interface: headphones can connect directly to it. Its support article also says a Windows DAW using ASIO can use only one device for input and output, which matters if you expect to combine separate audio devices. Focusrite’s interface guidance covers that setup.

Will a dedicated DAC or sound card sound better?
Not necessarily. A separate converter can change the signal path, and an amplifier can address insufficient output, but neither guarantees an audible improvement in every system. Whether a listener prefers one device over another is subjective, and the result depends on the complete setup. Corsair likewise cautions that listeners may prefer different devices or combinations in its motherboard-versus-DAC explainer.
SoundGuys identifies crackling or poor audio, missing output, and a need for additional features as reasons a dedicated card might be worth considering, while noting that most people do not need one for ordinary use. Its sound card overview is a consumer explainer, not a controlled test of your particular computer and headphones.
