Espanso is a cross-platform text expander for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Install it using the current instructions for your operating system, then add a YAML match that pairs a trigger with the text you want inserted. Because installer formats, OS requirements, and service setup can change, use Espanso’s live platform-specific guide for those steps.
What Espanso does
Espanso watches for configured keywords as you type and replaces a matching trigger with your chosen content. It is open-source software distributed under the GPL-3 license. See the official Espanso website for an overview and the Espanso project repository for project details and examples.
Install Espanso on your operating system
Use Espanso’s official installation instructions and select the guide for your operating system and version. The available installer, minimum OS version, permissions, and service setup are platform-specific and may change; follow the current instructions rather than relying on an older command or download format.
- Windows: Follow the current Windows installation guide, including any setup or permission steps it lists.
- macOS: Follow the current macOS guide for the version you use, including its service instructions.
- Linux: Choose the installation method and service setup documented for your distribution and version.
Espanso’s official releases page is the project’s release location. After installation, the CLI includes commands for inspecting paths and managing the service; consult the instructions for your platform before using service commands, since setup differs across operating systems.

Find the configuration directory
Espanso stores its configuration in files. Use the path command documented for your installed version to locate the configuration directory on your computer; do not assume the same directory path applies across Windows, macOS, and Linux. The project’s release documentation lists CLI path and service command families: Espanso releases.
Create your first text expansion
A match file defines what Espanso expands. General configuration files control application behavior, while match files hold triggers and their replacements. The project repository shows this basic YAML match:

replace: "Hi There!"- Create or open a match file in the configuration directory identified by Espanso.
- Add the
matches:structure and a trigger/replacement pair, following the example above. - Save the file and type the trigger in a text field to check whether Espanso replaces it with the configured text.
YAML indentation matters. Keep the spacing consistent with the example; malformed spacing or structure can prevent a match from loading. You can organize matches across additional files as your collection grows. For configuration details and examples, refer to the official repository.

Espanso packages provide reusable snippets. The official package guide recommends Espanso Hub for most users because its packages are manually verified by the Espanso team. Use the package documentation for current package instructions.

To install a package, run the documented CLI command with the package name:
espanso install <package_name>The CLI also supports listing packages, updating an individual package or all packages, and uninstalling a package. Check the package guide for the exact syntax and available options.

Troubleshoot a match that does not expand
- Check the trigger: Type the configured trigger exactly as it appears in the match file.
- Check YAML structure: Confirm that
matches:,trigger, andreplaceare indented as shown. - Check the file location: Use Espanso’s path command to confirm that you edited a file in its configuration directory.
- Check that Espanso is running: Follow the service instructions for your OS to verify or manage the running service.
- Consult current platform guidance: If installation or startup fails, use the OS-specific official instructions for your OS version; service and permission steps are not identical on all platforms.
