No—not on the evidence reported. The chainmail-inspired fabric is a 2021 research prototype that stiffened when vacuum pressure packed its linked structures together. Researchers reported changes in rigidity and a steel-ball deformation test, not a bullet test or ballistic certification. Its possible use in protective gear remains a proposal.
What is the chainmail-inspired fabric?
It is a structured material made from hollow, interlocking shapes—not conventional woven cloth. In the principal demonstration, the researchers 3D-printed nylon octahedrons, enclosed the structure in a flexible plastic envelope, and vacuum-packed it. Nature’s account describes a structure that can be reversibly tuned between flexible and rigid states by compression: Nature: Structured fabrics with tunable mechanical properties.
NTU’s 2021 summary also describes designs using rings, ovals, squares, cubes, pyramids and octahedrons, as well as an aluminum 3D-printed demonstration. The nylon and aluminum configurations are demonstrations of structured materials, not evidence that every geometry or material has the same performance. NTU: “Smart” fabric stiffens on demand.
How does it stiffen on demand?
- Start relaxed: The linked printed particles have room to move, so the fabric-like structure can bend.
- Apply pressure: The structure is enclosed and vacuum-packed. The pressure increases packing density and contact between neighboring particles.
- Jam the particles: With more contacts restricting movement, the structure resists deformation and becomes stiffer.
- Release compression: The effect is described as reversible, allowing the material to return toward a flexible state.
The mechanism is particle jamming: the change comes from how tightly the structures press against one another, rather than from a claim that the nylon itself transforms into a different material.

What did the experiments show?
The reported numbers belong to specific laboratory configurations. NTU’s summary and the release account reproduced by ScienceAQ describe the following demonstrations:

The measurements and experiment details are reported in the release text hosted by ScienceAQ. They should not be extrapolated to ballistic performance, a safety rating, or the behavior of a finished garment.

Does it stop bullets?
The cited accounts do not establish that it does. The steel ball used in the reported experiment was not a bullet, and the sources provide no ballistic certification result or regulator or standards-body finding. “Bulletproof” is therefore a question in the headline, not a demonstrated property of this prototype.
NTU’s account discusses armor as a possible application and says an aramid-fiber envelope such as Kevlar could be considered. That is a concept, not evidence that a Kevlar-encased version was tested or validated as bulletproof. New Atlas: chainmail-inspired fabric stiffens on demand.

What uses are proposed, and what is demonstrated?
The demonstrated work concerns 3D-printed structured fabric, vacuum-induced stiffening, load-bearing behavior in a particular flat structure, and reduced deformation in a steel-ball test. The aluminum demonstration is a separate material configuration.
Lightweight armor, sports protection, exoskeletons, configurable medical support and larger load-bearing structures are prospective applications described by the research accounts, not validated products. The team was also reported as exploring other ways to stiffen structures, including magnetism, electricity and temperature; those possibilities should not be confused with the vacuum-based demonstrations.

The 2021 work was developed by researchers at Nanyang Technological University Singapore and the California Institute of Technology. In the release text hosted by ScienceAQ, corresponding author Chiara Daraio, Caltech’s G. Bradford Jones Professor of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Physics, said: “We wanted to make materials that can change stiffness on command. We’d like to create a fabric that goes from soft and foldable to rigid and load-bearing in a controllable way.”
