Use the application’s editing and undo commands, keep a separate editable project and audio export, and favor adjustable processing when it suits the task.
Understand what undo history can—and cannot—protect
In Audacity, History lists project states and lets you move backward or forward through the actions made since the project was opened. The history remains available while that project stays open. Saving does not clear it, but closing the project discards it; reopening the saved project starts with an empty undo history. The edited audio remains in the saved project, but you cannot use the old session history to step back through those edits. Undo is sequential, not a set of independent checkpoints. If you undo several actions and then make a new edit, Audacity removes the former later actions from the redo path. An agent should therefore pause after rollback and confirm the desired state before making another change.
Prepare separate recovery artifacts
Keep an editable project and a rendered audio backup as separate files. The project preserves tracks and editability; an exported WAV or AIFF is a playable safety copy. Neither restores an Audacity undo stack after the project has been closed.

- Save a working copy of the project. Keep the original untouched so an agent’s changes are not your only editable version. Audacity’s project guidance recommends exporting a WAV or AIFF safety copy before editing a new recording; see Managing Audacity Projects.
- Export the safety copy separately. In Audacity, use File > Export Audio and choose WAV or AIFF for an uncompressed copy, or MP3 when a compressed listening copy is appropriate. Do not treat this render as a replacement for the project.
- Keep the working project open for as long as you need its current Undo History. Saving during that session is compatible with retaining the open session’s history; closing is not.
Audacity documentation surfaced for more than one project generation: legacy project guidance describes .aup3, while the current Audacity 4 saving page describes .aup4 projects that hold tracks, clips and edits. Check the documentation and behavior for the version you use rather than assuming a project extension or history-persistence rule applies across versions. The session-bound undo guidance remains the safe operating assumption when relying on the open project’s History.
Give the agent a bounded edit scope
Before an edit, specify the target track or clip, the time range, the operation and whether material should move to close a gap. This matters in multitrack work: an operation that changes timing on one track is not necessarily appropriate across all tracks.

- Name the track and clip, and identify the selection’s start and end.
- State the intended action, such as trimming, applying an effect, or adjusting gain.
- Say whether a deleted or moved section should leave a gap or close one, and whether ripple behavior should affect one clip, one track or all tracks.
- Ask the agent to inspect the result in the context of adjacent audio and other tracks before continuing.

Use Audacity’s documented scripting actions
Audacity’s scripting reference documents Undo, Redo and UndoHistory. Undo and Redo act on the most recent editing operation or the most recently undone operation; UndoHistory opens the History window for reviewing the action list. An agent can use these documented controls to work through Audacity’s normal edit history rather than silently rewriting project data. See the Scripting Reference.

These commands do not establish an agent-specific transaction system. The reference does not document transaction IDs, atomic batches, automatic checkpoints or a supported way to restore the undo stack after closing. Treat a series of commands as individual edits that need inspection, not as a guaranteed all-or-nothing operation.
- Have the agent make a small, clearly scoped batch of edits.
- Open History and inspect the actions, then listen to the changed region in context.
- If the result is wrong, undo only as far as needed and verify the waveform and playback.
- Do not make a fresh edit until you are sure you no longer need the abandoned redo branch.
- Save the project after verifying a useful state; keep the safety export separate.
Prefer adjustable processing when it fits
Audacity offers both destructive effects and realtime track effects. A destructive menu effect applied to a selection rewrites that audio. It can be undone while the project remains open, but after closing it, the processed audio is part of the saved project. By contrast, realtime effects on a track and clip gain leave the recording itself unchanged and can later be adjusted, switched off or removed. Realtime effects apply to a whole track. If only a short passage needs that processing, Audacity’s guidance suggests splitting it into its own clip and track, or using a destructive effect on the selected portion. For destructive processing, retain the working project and safety export first, then verify the result before moving on.

REAPER is another option when the agent can make edits through ordinary DAW actions. The REAPER 7.41 User Guide describes editing as non-destructive and points to both Edit > Undo and an Undo History window: Up and Running: A REAPER User Guide (v7.41).

That guide supports using REAPER’s editing and history view, but it does not establish that its history survives closing the application or that it provides an AI-agent transaction API. Do not assume either capability without version-specific documentation.
