Google Translate can crash a React app when it rewrites text nodes in the page outside React’s rendering process. React may then try to remove or insert a node using a parent-child relationship that translation has already changed. If you see a removeChild or insertBefore error only after translating, test the narrow conditional-rendering workaround below—but treat it as a fix for one reported reproduction, not a universal solution.

Why translation can break React’s DOM updates

React renders and tracks a DOM structure that it expects to remain consistent until React changes it. A browser translator or another extension can rewrite text in the page without going through React. If React later updates that part of the interface, its internal references may no longer match the actual parent-and-child relationships in the DOM. An insertion or removal can then fail.

This is a DOM ownership mismatch, not simply a problem with translated wording or a language code. The original React report, opened November 13, 2017, describes a Chrome page running React 16, translated from Japanese to English, where changing a checkbox triggers a removeChild exception. A separate report describes both insertBefore and removeChild failures after Google translation.

Recognize the errors

The reported removal error is:

Failed to execute 'removeChild' on 'Node': The node to be removed is not a child of this node.

  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Insertion can fail too:

Failed to execute 'insertBefore' on 'Node': The node before which the new node is to be inserted is not a child of this node.

A React issue for version 18.2.0, reported in 2023, describes a related failure after translating or programmatically clearing a component’s contents and then triggering a render that removes it; the page can go blank when removal fails. That report was closed as a duplicate. These reports show the failure is not confined to the original React 16 example, but they do not establish how every current React release, browser, translator, or extension behaves.

Try the narrow conditional-rendering adjustment

In the original reproduction, two separate conditional expressions render mutually exclusive bare text children:

{this.state.checked && "選択済み"}
{!this.state.checked && "無選択"}

The report says that expressing the choice as one conditional avoids the error in that example:

{this.state.checked ? "選択済み" : "無選択"}

If your component uses the same pattern, try rendering the alternatives through one conditional expression and retest the interaction after translating. This is a reported minimal-case workaround, not evidence that the change protects arbitrary translated interfaces.

Compare the available mitigation choices

Approach Translation preserved? What the evidence supports Main tradeoff
Use one conditional expression for mutually exclusive bare text Yes Avoided the error in the original React report’s reproduction. Applies to a narrow rendering pattern; test the actual component and interaction.
Suppress translation for a subtree with notranslate or translation suppression No, for that subtree Mentioned in the original issue thread as a way to prevent translator mutation there. Users cannot translate that content through the invoked page translation.
Swallow removeChild or insertBefore exceptions with a monkey patch Not inherently prevented Discussed in secondary technical material; preventing the exception does not reconcile React’s expected tree with the visible DOM. Updates may target detached nodes and the visible page may become stale.

Debug the translated interaction

  1. Confirm the trigger. Check whether the error appears only after Google Translate or another DOM-mutating extension has changed the page.
  2. Reproduce the specific update. Reduce the affected component to the smallest case that shows the error, including the state change that adds, updates, or removes text.
  3. Test a targeted code change. If the component renders mutually exclusive bare text children as separate conditions, try the single conditional expression shown above.
  4. Retest both page states. Exercise the same state changes with and without translation, and confirm that the visible interface continues to update correctly.
  5. Monitor both exception types. Search logs and error monitoring for removeChild as well as insertBefore; either can signal that the DOM structure React expects has changed.

Why a swallowed exception is not a complete fix

Suppressing a subtree from translation avoids the translator changing that part of the DOM, but it also removes the translated experience there. Swallowing a DOM exception merely prevents that exception from stopping execution; it does not restore the node relationships React expects. The visible interface can remain stale, so a global monkey patch should not be treated as a production fix without testing its consequences.

What the reports do—and do not—establish

The reports document examples involving React 16 in 2017 and React 18.2.0 in 2023, plus insertion and removal failures. They do not prove that one mitigation works across all releases, browsers, translation tools, and extensions, nor do they establish how frequently the problem occurs. Validate a candidate fix with your app’s actual browser setup and translated interactions rather than assuming that a workaround for one reproduction generalizes.
