2021 brought several landmark space missions: NASA landed Perseverance on Mars and flew the Ingenuity helicopter there, Parker Solar Probe crossed into the Sun’s corona, and the James Webb Space Telescope launched. China and the UAE advanced Mars exploration, China began crewed operations at its Tiangong space station, and commercial operators flew both suborbital passengers and an orbital crew.

Why 2021 stood out in space exploration

The year’s milestones spanned robotic science, government human spaceflight, commercial crewed missions and launch-vehicle development. They were not all the same kind of achievement: a helicopter’s first flight on another planet, a passenger ride above Earth and a private orbital mission have different goals and profiles. The highlights below are selected events, not a complete list of launches or discoveries.

What happened on Mars in 2021?

Perseverance and Ingenuity

NASA’s Perseverance rover landed in Jezero Crater on February 18, carrying the Ingenuity helicopter. On April 19, Ingenuity achieved the first powered, controlled flight on another planet. NASA’s December 2021 year-end review described the rover and helicopter as central Mars milestones.

In a December 28 snapshot of Perseverance’s first ten months, NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory reported that the rover had driven 1.8 miles (2.9 kilometers), taken more than 100,000 images and collected six samples. The same snapshot recorded 18 Ingenuity flights. These are figures reported at the end of 2021, not current mission totals. NASA JPL’s first-ten-month account provides that dated context.

Zhurong and Hope

Mars exploration was international. China’s Tianwen-1 mission landed the Zhurong rover at Utopia Planitia in May; Zhurong rolled onto the surface in June. The United Arab Emirates’ Hope orbiter began studying Mars. Together, these missions made 2021 a year of distinct rover and orbiter activity, rather than a single-country story.

How did Parker Solar Probe “touch the Sun”?

During its eighth solar encounter on April 28, NASA’s Parker Solar Probe crossed the Alfvén critical surface and entered the Sun’s corona, the outer solar atmosphere. NASA announced the finding on December 14. The spacecraft passed at about 18.8 solar radii—roughly 8.1 million miles above the Sun’s visible surface. “Touching the Sun” is shorthand for entering the corona; Parker did not touch the visible surface. NASA described the milestone in its December 14 announcement.

“Parker Solar Probe ‘touching the Sun’ is a monumental moment for solar science and a truly remarkable feat,” said Thomas Zurbuchen, then associate administrator for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate.

What did the James Webb Space Telescope achieve in 2021?

Webb launched on December 25, 2021, aboard an Ariane 5 rocket from French Guiana. Launch began the telescope’s journey to its operating orbit; commissioning and scientific observations followed later. The 2021 milestone was the launch, not a year of Webb discoveries. NASA’s Webb launch timeline records the date and mission context.

How did human spaceflight change during the year?

China’s Tiangong station

China launched the Tianhe core module in April, beginning construction of its Tiangong space station. In June, the Shenzhou 12 crew docked with the station, marking the first crewed mission to Tiangong.

Commercial flights: suborbital and orbital

Blue Origin flew passengers on New Shepard, including William Shatner. These were suborbital flights: they crossed into space but did not carry passengers into orbit. SpaceX’s Inspiration4, by contrast, was a private orbital mission that completed its flight in September. The distinction matters: both involved private passengers, but only Inspiration4 was an orbital mission.

The year also included a launch-vehicle development milestone: SpaceX’s SN15 Starship prototype completed a powered landing after a high-altitude test. That was a test flight of a vehicle prototype, not a crewed spaceflight.

Which other missions made notable progress?

  • Juno: NASA’s spacecraft flew past Jupiter’s moon Ganymede and returned observations of Jupiter.
  • OSIRIS-REx: The NASA mission departed asteroid Bennu to begin its return journey.
  • SN15: SpaceX’s Starship prototype completed a powered landing after its high-altitude test, as described above.

These examples add to the year’s range of robotic exploration and vehicle development; they are highlights rather than a ranking of every mission.

How to read the year’s milestones

A useful way to compare 2021’s achievements is to ask what kind of mission each was, who operated it, where it went and what happened that year. That keeps unlike events in perspective: Perseverance collected samples on Mars, Parker entered the corona, Webb began its journey with a launch, and human missions ranged from station operations to suborbital passenger flights and private orbital flight. The year’s significance lies in that breadth, not in a single all-purpose measure.
