Honda’s experimental reusable rocket completed a short launch-and-landing test in Taiki Town, Hokkaido, on June 17, 2025. Honda reported that it reached 271.4 meters, flew for 56.6 seconds and touched down within 37 centimeters of its target. The demonstration tested ascent, descent and landing technologies; it was not an orbital launch or a suborbital flight.

What happened in Honda’s rocket test?

Honda R&D Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of Honda Motor Co., Ltd., conducted its first launch-and-landing test of the experimental rocket at its facility in Taiki Town, Hokkaido, Japan. Honda said the test was intended to demonstrate flight stability during ascent and descent, landing capability and technologies needed to make a rocket reusable. Honda’s June 17, 2025 announcement reported a 56.6-second flight, a maximum altitude of 271.4 meters and touchdown within 37 centimeters of the target point.

Those measurements describe a low-altitude technology demonstration. They do not show that the rocket reached space, achieved suborbital flight or delivered a payload.

What are the rocket’s reported specifications?

Honda gave the experimental vehicle’s dimensions and mass in its announcement. The figures are company-reported; the cited sources do not provide independent verification.

Honda also described a safety arrangement for the test: a restricted area with a one-kilometer radius and a system intended to keep the rocket within defined flight-corridor, speed and attitude limits. These are Honda’s descriptions of its safety planning, not an independent assessment of the system. Honda’s announcement contains the reported specifications and safety details.

Which technologies was Honda testing?

Honda described its development as a phased program involving engine-combustion, hovering, launch and landing tests. At SPACETIDE 2025, Honda R&D President and Representative Director Keiji Otsu said the team was examining engine ignition and combustion, thrust and position control, and deployment of the landing legs. Honda had conducted combustion and hovering tests at Taiki since 2024. Honda R&D’s SPACETIDE 2025 account outlines those test stages.

Honda R&D chief engineer Kenichiro Ikeya said the experimental vehicle used a turbopump to move methane and oxygen from its tanks to the combustor. Ikeya explained that Honda included the system because the company’s eventual aim is to deliver satellites into space, where a turbopump would be necessary. That is his explanation of the design choice, not an independent engineering review. Honda’s account of the program also discusses the vehicle’s development.

Why is Honda working on rockets?

Honda says it began space research in 2019 and is working across three areas: a circulative renewable-energy system, space robotics and sustainable rockets. Its rocket ambition is to transport satellites and other payloads with reusable rockets powered by renewable fuel. The company points to potential satellite-enabled services such as Earth remote sensing and wide-area communications; these are envisioned applications, not services produced by the test vehicle. Honda describes these ambitions in its 2025 announcement and Japan Mobility Show 2025 page.

Honda R&D project manager Junichiro Ishimura has also framed the effort as a way to lower barriers to satellite launches for private companies and startups. The cited material does not establish a launch-cost estimate or quantified savings, so the scale of any future cost reduction remains unknown. Honda Stories’ interview with Ishimura explains the company’s stated rationale.

Will Honda launch a rocket into space by 2029?

Honda’s stated technology-development goal is to achieve capability that would enable a suborbital launch by 2029. That is a goal, not a confirmed launch date or evidence that a suborbital flight has happened. The June 2025 announcement said the work remained in the fundamental research phase and that Honda had made no decision about commercialization. The sources cited here do not establish a later change to that status. Honda’s announcement sets out the goal and qualification.

Suborbital capability would be a step beyond the June test, but it is distinct from orbital capability: the reported 271.4-meter flight did not demonstrate either. Nor has Honda announced a customer launch service or a production rocket in the cited material.
