farmHand is an experimental Stanford robotic hand designed to combine flexible, multifinger grasping with a strong, delicate grip. Its key idea is to pair tendon-driven fingers with gecko-inspired adhesive pads mounted on compliant, collapsible supports. In 2021 demonstrations reported by Stanford, the prototype handled both fragile items and heavier objects—but those tests do not establish how it would perform with arbitrary objects or in everyday settings.

What is farmHand?

farmHand is a research prototype developed by Wilson Ruotolo and Dane Brouwer at Stanford’s Biomimetics and Dextrous Manipulation Lab. The related paper was written by Ruotolo, Brouwer and Mark R. Cutkosky. The team explored a design trade-off in robotics: anthropomorphic hands can offer grasp mobility and task flexibility, while simpler parallel-jaw grippers can provide practical strength.

The hand combines multiple tendon-driven fingers with gecko-inspired adhesive pads. Rather than relying on adhesive alone, the design uses compliant supports to help the pads make and maintain useful contact. Stanford described the work in 2021; the sources cited here do not establish a later retail product or commercial launch.

How does the gecko-inspired grip work?

Gecko-inspired adhesives need effective contact with a surface to work well. The paper identifies three relevant design principles: provide enough contact area, share shear loads across the fingers, and distribute normal stress evenly. These considerations matter because adhesive patches can lose grip if they contact an object poorly or carry uneven forces.

Compliant ribs help share force

Each adhesive pad is supported by a collapsible rib structure. Stanford’s report explains that the ribs buckle under low force, helping equalize force across the pads and reducing the chance that one patch slips before the others engage. Dane Brouwer described the effect this way: “If you move these ribs, the buckling results in a similar force no matter where you start.”

Multiple fingers create more ways to grasp

The multifinger structure gives the hand more contact options than a simple parallel-jaw gripper. Tendons let the fingers form a hyperextended pinch, pressing fingertip pads against one another to increase adhesive contact area. In the paper’s tests, the researchers confirmed shear-load sharing and demonstrated adhesive manipulation beyond a basic pick-and-place grasp.

  • This robotic arm building block set comes in a beautiful gift box, perfect if you're considering gifting it to your son or daughter, or even a friend,Then he will be the gift you can best present. It presents a significant challenge, and Uncle Brick recommends that the child be 8 years or older to assemble this toy.

What did farmHand demonstrate?

Stanford reported demonstrations with objects spanning delicate, soft and heavier categories. The examples included raw eggs and grapes, as well as plates, liquid jugs, basketballs and an angle grinder. These are demonstrations reported by the research team, not comparative benchmarks or proof that the hand can handle every object in those categories.

Wilson Ruotolo, then a graduate student in the lab, described the aim as addressing “how to create manipulators that are both dexterous and strong at the same time.” The reported demonstrations illustrate that goal, but the cited abstract does not provide numerical measures for grip strength, speed, reliability or durability.

What are the design’s limitations?

Adhesive contact can be finicky

Adhesive patches work best when they meet an object in suitable contact. Irregular shapes can force different patches to touch at different angles, making it difficult to get the whole hand to engage consistently. Mark Cutkosky, the paper’s senior author, summarized the challenge: “The problem is that it turns out that gecko adhesives are actually very fussy.”

Soft objects are hard to predict

Stanford reported that computer simulations struggled to predict real-world performance with soft objects. The work therefore does not show that gecko-inspired adhesion removes the need for grasp planning, sensing or task-specific design. Stanford described feedback features as a possible future improvement, so a user could better assess how the hand is gripping.
