For most PS5 owners, keeping the retail box is optional. Keep it if you have room and expect to move, ship, resell, or collect the console; otherwise, it is reasonable to recycle or discard it. Sony’s repair-return guidance in Ireland allows a sturdy substitute box, so the original packaging is not universally required for service.
When keeping the PS5 box makes sense
- You may move or ship the console: Its fitted packaging can be useful for storage and transport. If it is bulky or damaged, however, keeping it may not be worthwhile.

- You have limited storage: If the box takes up space and you do not expect to use it, discarding it is a reasonable choice.
Do you need the original box for a PS5 repair?
Not universally. PlayStation’s Ireland PS5 return instructions say customers who want to keep the retail packaging can send the console in “any sturdy cardboard box.” The same guidance warns that Sony cannot guarantee the console will be returned in the same packaging it was sent in. The cited Canadian warranty describes a service shipment using a shipping box and prepaid label supplied by Sony; it does not make retaining the retail box a condition of warranty coverage. How to pack a PS5 without its retail box
Follow the repair provider’s instructions first. For an Ireland PS5 return, Sony advises wrapping the console in bubble wrap, placing it in a strong cardboard box, filling empty space with packing material so the console cannot move, and sealing the package with parcel tape.

- Wrap the console in bubble wrap or other suitable protective material.
- Place it in a strong, undamaged cardboard box.
- Fill gaps with packing material so the console cannot shift during transit.
- Seal the box securely with parcel tape and follow the return provider’s labeling and shipping instructions.
PlayStation’s general UK return guidance recommends high-quality corrugated cardboard, void filler, and strong tape. It cautions against using boxes that are visibly damaged or may have lost strength. Does keeping the box increase resale value?
That is not established by the cited sources. The box may make a future sale more convenient or appealing to a particular buyer, but there is no supported price premium to rely on. Treat resale presentation as a personal reason to keep it—not a guaranteed increase in what the console will sell for.
