ChatGPT is useful for brainstorming, explaining and organizing information, but it can be confidently wrong, handle sensitive information in ways you may not expect, and—when using agent features—take actions on websites. The risk is not that every use is unsafe: it is that a mistake can be hard to spot or costly to undo. Use it for a first pass, not as the final authority, when the task involves health, money, private data or consequential decisions.

There is no official list of exactly eleven forbidden tasks. The examples below group common situations by the risk involved and show how to use ChatGPT more safely.

How to decide whether ChatGPT is safe for a task

Before relying on an answer, consider four things: what a mistake could cost, whether you can check the answer independently, how sensitive your input is, and whether ChatGPT can act outside the conversation. A low-stakes draft is easy to review; a medical decision, private record or signed-in website action is not.

  • High consequences: verify important claims and involve the qualified person or institution responsible for the decision.
  • Hard to verify: ask for sources, then open the original sources yourself. A citation in an answer is not proof that it exists or supports the claim.
  • Sensitive input: share less, remove identifying details where possible, and check the applicable data controls.
  • External actions: supervise an agent and personally approve actions that could disclose information or change an account.

11 tasks to handle with care

1. Treating an answer as a verified fact

ChatGPT can produce incorrect or misleading information, including fabricated quotes, studies, citations and references, while sounding confident. OpenAI advises checking important information and verifying quotes, data, technical details and references against reliable sources. See OpenAI’s guidance on whether ChatGPT tells the truth.

Use it to get oriented or generate questions. For a claim that matters, locate the original document or a dependable source and confirm the wording, date and context yourself.

2. Using it to diagnose symptoms or choose treatment

ChatGPT Health is intended to help people understand health information and prepare for care, not to diagnose or treat. OpenAI states: “Health is designed to support, not replace, medical care and is not intended for diagnosis or treatment.” For urgent symptoms or an emergency, seek immediate professional help rather than waiting for a chatbot response. Details and availability of Health features may vary as they roll out. See OpenAI’s Health in ChatGPT guidance.

You can use a health conversation to organize questions for a clinician or clarify unfamiliar terms, but do not use its answer as a substitute for clinical assessment or instructions from your care team.

3. Interpreting medical images

Do not rely on an uploaded image to interpret a scan or make a consequential medical judgment. OpenAI says image inputs are not suitable for interpreting specialized medical images such as CT scans and should not be used for medical advice. Image descriptions can also be wrong. See OpenAI’s image-input limitations.

Ask the clinician or imaging service responsible for the scan to explain the result. An image-based chatbot response is not a radiology report.

4. Making a financial decision or executing a transaction

ChatGPT can help explain financial concepts and support planning, but OpenAI’s May 2026 personal-finance guidance says it cannot move money, pay bills, place trades or file taxes, and is not a financial, legal, tax or investment adviser. That is product guidance, not independent legal analysis. See the ChatGPT release notes.

Use it to clarify terminology or prepare questions, then verify decisions with authoritative records and an appropriately qualified professional. Do not mistake a fluent explanation for individualized advice or an executed transaction.

5. Relying on it for legal or tax conclusions

A legal or tax answer can depend on facts, jurisdiction and rules that change. OpenAI’s guidance says ChatGPT does not act as a legal or tax adviser. Use it to explain a term or help organize documents, not to settle what the law requires in your situation. Check the relevant government or court source, or consult a qualified professional when the result matters.

6. Sharing private or sensitive information casually

Consumer-service content may be used to improve model performance depending on your settings. OpenAI says content is stored on OpenAI and trusted service-provider systems in the US and around the world, and that a limited number of authorized personnel and providers may access it for specified purposes. Its advice is direct: “Please do not enter sensitive information that you would not want reviewed or used.” See the Data Usage for Consumer Services FAQ.

Eligible individual-service users can turn off “Improve the model for everyone” for new conversations and tasks, according to OpenAI’s data-use controls guidance. Controls and labels can change, so check the current settings in your account. A setting is not a reason to paste information you do not need to share: remove names, account numbers, credentials and identifying details where possible.

7. Uploading a chart and trusting the reading

ChatGPT may have difficulty with graphs, and an image description can be inaccurate. Do not base a business, health or financial decision on a chart interpretation without checking the underlying values and axes. OpenAI lists graph interpretation among the image-input limitations in its image-input FAQ.

For important analysis, inspect the source data and reproduce the calculation in a suitable spreadsheet or analytical tool.

8. Asking it to count objects in an image precisely

Image-based counts can be approximate. If an exact count matters—for example, checking inventory or documenting evidence—count the objects yourself or use a tool designed for the required accuracy. OpenAI notes approximate object counts as a limitation of image inputs in its image-input FAQ.

9. Relying on an image answer to locate something precisely

ChatGPT can struggle with precise spatial localization in images. Do not use a visual answer as the sole basis for a safety-critical location, measurement or identification. Verify the position directly, using an appropriate measurement or inspection method. This limitation is also described in OpenAI’s image-input guidance.

10. Letting an agent operate a signed-in website unsupervised

ChatGPT agent can use websites while signed in, which may expose sensitive information and allow actions such as sharing files or changing account settings. OpenAI identifies prompt injection as a risk: content on a page may try to manipulate the agent. Its safeguards reduce risk but do not eliminate it. See OpenAI’s ChatGPT agent guidance.

Stay present, limit access to what the task requires, and review each consequential action before it happens. Do not leave an agent to make sensitive account changes, share files or submit information without your oversight.

11. Letting a generated citation stand in for reading the source

A reference can look plausible and still be fabricated, misquoted or irrelevant. This is a specific version of ChatGPT’s broader accuracy limitation, not a separate guarantee that citations are reliable. Open every source and confirm that it exists and supports the sentence attached to it; if it cannot be verified, do not cite it. OpenAI discusses fabricated citations and references in its truthfulness guidance.

A practical rule for using ChatGPT safely

Use ChatGPT to explain, draft, brainstorm or help prepare—but keep responsibility for verification and decisions. The more harm an error could cause, the more sensitive the information involved, or the more power an agent has to act, the less you should rely on an unchecked answer. Check the original source, consult the relevant professional, minimize what you share, and retain approval over external actions.
