If 1Password and Obsidian had a “baby,” it would pair the knowledge organization of a local Markdown vault with the controlled storage of passwords and other secrets. That’s a useful product idea—not a combined app established by the available documentation. The names can also be confusing: 1Password documents an integration with Obsidian Security, an enterprise SaaS security platform, not with the Obsidian notes app.

What would the two apps contribute?

Area 1Password Obsidian
Primary job Stores credentials and other secrets, including developer secrets. Organizes knowledge in a local Markdown vault, with optional remote synchronization.
Typical material Passwords, API credentials, and other sensitive values. Notes, references, project documentation, and links between ideas.
Extensibility 1Password CLI supports supplying secrets to scripts and configuration templates. Plugins can extend the app; developers have a shared SecretStorage mechanism for named secrets.

Those roles complement one another, but they are not interchangeable. A note can explain how a service works; a password manager is designed to protect the actual credential. Treating a plain note as a secret store would erase an important security boundary.

Is there a direct 1Password integration for the Obsidian notes app?

The reviewed official documentation does not establish a native integration between the consumer 1Password app and Obsidian’s notes app. It also does not establish that no community plugin or third-party workflow exists, so it would be too broad to claim that none is available.

The documented product called Obsidian in 1Password’s integration material is Obsidian Security. That corporate SaaS security platform uses 1Password Events API activity data for enterprise security monitoring. It is not a bridge for reading or storing notes in the Obsidian Markdown app. See 1Password’s Obsidian Security integration description.

What is safe to do with the products today?

Keep credentials out of ordinary notes

Use 1Password for passwords and other sensitive values. Keep Obsidian notes focused on context: what a credential is for, which system uses it, or where authorized access is managed—without pasting the secret itself into the vault.

Understand Obsidian’s local and synced data separately

Obsidian’s local vault is not encrypted by Obsidian. Obsidian Sync can encrypt a remote vault and communications with its servers; its end-to-end encrypted mode uses scrypt with salt and AES-256-GCM. Obsidian says the Sync encryption password cannot be recovered by the company if it is lost. Some synchronization metadata remains readable to the server, including which device uploaded or deleted a file, when that happened, and mappings between encrypted paths and encrypted content. These distinctions are explained in Obsidian’s Sync security and privacy documentation.

Use plugin secret storage instead of plugin settings for secrets

Obsidian’s developer documentation warns that secrets stored directly in a plugin’s data.json are left in plaintext and describes SecretStorage as a shared store from which plugins can retrieve named secrets. Plugin developers should use an appropriate secret store rather than putting API credentials in notes or ordinary plugin settings. The mechanism is documented at Obsidian’s Store secrets guide.

Use 1Password CLI for supported script workflows

For command-line automation, 1Password documents op run, op read, and op inject as ways to supply secrets at runtime or populate configuration templates. Its guidance recommends restricting service accounts to the vaults a task needs. This is a documented scripting route, not evidence of automatic access from the Obsidian app. Details are in 1Password’s CLI guide to secrets in scripts.

Connecting Obsidian’s SecretStorage mechanism to 1Password CLI could be an implementation idea for a developer, but the reviewed sources do not document or certify that connection. It would need technical validation and careful attention to access scope, local storage, and failure handling.

How should you compare their security?

Compare each product against the job it is designed to do rather than treating them as rival password managers. 1Password’s support documentation describes account data as end-to-end encrypted with AES-GCM-256 and says a 128-bit Secret Key is combined with the account password. It also describes automatic clipboard clearing and auto-lock. These are vendor descriptions of its design, not independent comparative test results. See 1Password’s security documentation.

Obsidian’s protection depends on where the data is: the local vault is not encrypted by Obsidian, while Sync offers remote-vault encryption options. If you enable end-to-end encryption for Sync, protect the encryption password yourself because Obsidian cannot recover it. Neither product’s stated design makes it a substitute for the other, and the available sources provide no like-for-like independent security benchmark.

What would a sensible combined product look like?

A well-designed “baby” would let users connect useful context without collapsing notes and secrets into the same storage. For example, a note could describe a service and point to the relevant credential in a controlled way, while the password manager remains responsible for secret access. Developers might also want a vetted way for approved plugins to request narrowly scoped secrets without copying them into note files or plaintext settings.

That is a design concept, not a feature set confirmed for a combined product. Any real bridge would need to define permissions, where secrets appear during use, how access is revoked, and what happens when synchronization or a script fails. The documented CLI and plugin mechanisms offer distinct building blocks, but their automatic interoperability is not established.
