In one reported test of Traefik 3.6.25, requests that spoofed X-Role: admin but did not match the parent router’s /api path were sent to a catchall service—not the admin service. Alex Georgiev reports 500 such requests from 50 concurrent workers, with zero admin-service hits and 500 catchall hits. That is a useful result for this configuration, not proof that Traefik blocks every header-spoofing attack or a substitute for testing your own authentication and routing setup.
What happened in the 500-request test?
Georgiev describes a File-provider configuration running in Docker on Traefik 3.6.25. A parent router matched PathPrefix(`/api`) and applied middleware that set X-Role: admin. A child router matched HeaderRegexp(`X-Role`, `^admin$`) and referenced the parent using parentRefs. A lower-priority catchall route handled requests that did not match the hierarchy.
Georgiev reports that requests under /api passed through the parent middleware and then matched the child. Requests outside that path, even when they included a client-supplied X-Role: admin header, went to the catchall service. In his stated test, 500 spoofed-header requests across 50 concurrent workers produced zero reported admin-service hits and 500 reported catchall hits. These are the author’s results, not an official Traefik benchmark or an independently replicated security finding. Read the test report.
The report also says three-level nesting routed as expected in that setup. The test used Traefik’s customRequestHeaders middleware; it did not test a real authentication service or ForwardAuth response-header behavior.

How multi-layer routing is supposed to work
Traefik Labs describes the feature this way: “Multi-layer routing enables you to create hierarchical relationships between routers, where parent routers can process requests through middleware before child routers make final routing decisions.” The official v3.6 documentation describes the sequence:
- A request arrives at an entrypoint.
- A matching parent router runs its middleware, which may modify the request.
- A child router evaluates the resulting request, including any attributes changed by the parent middleware.
- The request proceeds to the service defined by the matching child router.
This design can support authentication-based routing: for example, ForwardAuth can validate a request and return role headers that child routers use to select a destination. The documentation explains the intended pattern; it does not independently validate a particular deployment or authentication chain.

Can a client call a child router directly or bypass authentication with a header?
The documented design requires requests to flow through a parent: child routers cannot be called directly. A client-supplied role header by itself should not make a request outside the parent’s match eligible for a child in the intended hierarchy. Georgiev’s test reports that outcome for one path, provider, version, and middleware configuration.
That result does not establish that every possible routing topology or middleware chain is safe from bypass. Before relying on the hierarchy to protect a sensitive service, test the deployed version and provider with the actual authentication mechanism, routes, headers, and fallback behavior. In particular, do not treat the custom-header test as evidence that a real ForwardAuth integration behaves identically.

Which providers support multi-layer routing?
Provider support determines whether you can define the hierarchy. Traefik’s v3.6 documentation lists File configuration, KV stores, and Kubernetes CRD IngressRoute. It does not support multi-layer routing through Docker labels alone, standard Kubernetes Ingress, or the Gateway API provider.
For a Docker deployment, Traefik’s v3.6 advanced guide describes combining the File provider for the router hierarchy with the Docker provider for service discovery; Docker labels do not support parentRefs. Use the documentation matching your deployed release and provider rather than translating a configuration example across providers.

How do parent and child routers inherit settings?
- Root routers have no
parentRefsand can define entrypoints and TLS settings. - Intermediate routers reference parent routers and cannot define services.
- Leaf routers reference parents and must define services.
- Non-root routers inherit root settings such as entrypoints and TLS.
Georgiev also warns that a dynamic configuration containing parentRefs may fail when read by an older, pre-3.6 instance. Treat that as compatibility guidance from his report and verify behavior with the exact versions and providers used in your rollout.
What should you verify before using this for a sensitive service?
- Confirm that the deployed Traefik version and chosen provider support the hierarchy you configured.
- Exercise the real authentication middleware and verify which response headers reach child routers.
- Test both requests that match the parent and requests that do not, including client-supplied copies of trusted-looking headers.
- Check that unmatched requests reach an intentional fallback rather than an unexpectedly exposed service.
- Inspect logs and routing behavior in the target deployment so a misconfiguration or failed match is observable.
A separate Traefik advisory concerns a header-disclosure issue in the errors middleware: it affected versions through v3.6.14, with v3.6.15 listed as patched. That issue is distinct from multi-layer routing and Georgiev’s test; check the advisory against the version you operate rather than treating a successful routing test as a general security review.
