Apple’s iPhone Handoff lets you share one mobile number between two iPhones, but only one phone is active on the network at a time. Unlock the iPhone you want to use to switch the active phone. Apple’s setup guide currently names T-Mobile in the United States and Telekom in Germany; availability depends on carrier and region, so confirm support and any fees with your carrier before enrolling.
What iPhone Handoff does
iPhone Handoff is a carrier-supported way to use one mobile number on two iPhones. It does not make both phones active on the shared number simultaneously: unlocking one phone activates it and makes the other inactive. Apple’s setup guidance displays “Switched to this iPhone” when the switch completes. Apple’s iPhone Handoff setup guide explains the feature and its limits.
Which carriers support iPhone Handoff?
Apple’s current setup guide names these supported-carrier examples:

These are the carriers named in that Apple guide, not a definitive list of every supported carrier or country. Apple says participation varies by carrier and region and advises customers to check with their carrier. Confirm that your specific plan and account are eligible, and ask whether enrollment costs extra; Apple notes that carrier fees might apply but does not state an amount.

Requirements before you set it up
Apple lists the following requirements for iPhone Handoff:
- Two iPhones running iOS 27 or later.
- Wi-Fi access and the same Apple Account on both phones.
- Messages in iCloud enabled.
- That Apple Account signed in to iMessage and FaceTime.
- An eSIM from a participating carrier.
Apple’s setup guidance does not specify a minimum iPhone model. An iPhone that meets the operating-system requirement is not necessarily guaranteed to qualify; verify your model with Apple or your carrier before relying on the feature.

How to set up iPhone Handoff
You can start during setup of a new iPhone or configure it later. For an existing phone, Apple gives this path; labels may vary slightly with software version or carrier provisioning.
- On the iPhone, open Settings → Cellular → Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM.
- Choose “Use Number on This iPhone and Another”.
- Follow the on-screen instructions on both iPhones, including the carrier’s enrollment prompts.
- Choose which iPhone is the main phone when prompted. To switch which phone is active after setup, unlock the iPhone you want to use.

What does not switch or sync automatically
- Carrier controls: Call forwarding, Caller ID, and carrier account management can be managed only on the designated main iPhone.
- Apple Watch pairing: The paired watch does not switch along with the active iPhone. Apple advises pairing it with the phone you use most often.
- Third-party apps: Each app handles syncing according to its own behavior, so Handoff does not guarantee identical app state on both iPhones.
iPhone Handoff is not the same as Apple’s other Handoff
Apple also calls its feature for continuing an activity from one Apple device on another “Handoff.” That task-continuity feature is separate: it does not provision one mobile number to two iPhones. See Apple’s guide to handing off tasks between devices.
Calls on other Apple devices and Wi-Fi Calling are separate arrangements with their own carrier requirements. They should not be taken as proof that a carrier supports iPhone Handoff or that two iPhones share an active eSIM. Apple describes Wi-Fi Calling and supported devices in its Wi-Fi Calling guide.
