The practical difference is how you work with them: Claude Code centers on a terminal or supported IDE, while Cursor puts its agent inside an AI-powered editor and offers distinct modes for read-only exploration, targeted edits, and more autonomous work. Neither product’s documentation establishes that it is more accurate, faster, or better at coding. The ten workflows below show how to choose and supervise each tool for common tasks; they are examples based on documented capabilities, not results from a head-to-head test.
How to read this comparison
Claude Code is available through a terminal and supported IDEs. Its command-line interface supports interactive sessions as well as non-interactive use. Cursor’s Agent works in the editor and can search a project, make multi-file changes, run terminal commands, and address errors. Both vendors also document remote ways to delegate work.
Cursor makes control level explicit through Agent, Ask, Manual, and Custom modes. Claude Code workflows are organized around a conversation in the terminal or IDE, with command-line options for managing sessions and use outside the interactive interface. Those are workflow distinctions, not proof that one tool has capabilities the other lacks. See Anthropic’s Claude Code FAQ, CLI reference, Cursor’s Agent overview, and Modes documentation.
For each task, start with a narrow request, give the tool relevant context, and inspect its explanation and proposed changes. Review and run code yourself before treating an edit as complete.

1. Explain an unfamiliar repository
Claude Code
Open a terminal in the repository, start an interactive Claude Code session, and ask for a guided map: identify the application entry point, major modules, and how a specific user-facing flow connects them. Ask it to cite file paths and explain the call chain before proposing changes. Its documented ability to read repositories makes this a natural exploratory workflow.
Cursor
Open the repository in Cursor and use Ask mode to ask the same question. Ask mode is documented as read-only codebase exploration, so it fits an initial explanation without delegating edits. If you later want implementation help, move to Agent or another appropriate mode after deciding what should change.
Useful distinction: Cursor provides a named read-only mode; Claude Code can be asked to investigate without edits, but the documented workflow is a conversational session rather than a separate Ask mode.
2. Find where a small behavior is implemented
Claude Code
Ask Claude Code to locate the behavior, trace its path from the relevant entry point, and report the responsible files and conditions. Keep the first request investigative: ask it not to edit files. The terminal or IDE session can then use the identified paths as context for a follow-up.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsCursor
Use Ask mode to search for the behavior and explain how the relevant code works. Request file paths and the conditions that trigger the behavior, then check those locations in the editor. This keeps the search separate from an edit.
Review point: A search result is a lead, not a substitute for checking the call sites and surrounding logic—especially when behavior is conditional or implemented in more than one place.
3. Make a targeted one-file edit
Claude Code
In the terminal or supported IDE session, name the file, the intended behavior, and any constraints. Ask for the smallest change that meets the requirement, then inspect the diff before accepting it. If the request is only to understand the existing code, say so explicitly rather than asking for an edit.

Cursor
Select the file and use Manual mode when you want direct edits limited to explicitly selected files, without codebase search or command execution. For a request that needs broader investigation, use a suitable mode instead; Manual’s documented boundaries are useful precisely when the scope is already clear.
In either tool, check that the edit preserves nearby conventions and handles relevant edge cases. A one-file request does not guarantee that a one-file change is sufficient.
4. Add a small feature across multiple files
Claude Code
Describe the feature, expected behavior, and constraints in the session. Ask Claude Code to identify the files that need changes, implement the feature, and explain how the pieces fit together. Its documentation describes repository reading and multi-file edits.
Cursor
Use Agent mode for autonomous, multi-file work. State the expected behavior and important boundaries, such as interfaces that must remain stable. Cursor documents Agent as able to explore a codebase, edit multiple files, run terminal commands, and fix errors.
For both, inspect every changed file and check that the implementation is consistent across the interface, underlying logic, and any relevant tests. The fact that a tool can make coordinated edits does not establish that the feature is correct.
5. Refactor repeated logic
Claude Code
Ask it first to find the repeated logic and explain whether the occurrences have the same behavior and constraints. Then request a refactor that preserves behavior and identify the tests or checks that should validate it. Review the proposed changes across all affected files.
Cursor
Use Ask mode to locate and compare candidate repetitions before editing. If they are genuinely equivalent, switch to Agent for a multi-file refactor; if the exact files are already known and the change is tightly scoped, Manual mode can limit the edit surface.

Do not consolidate code just because it looks similar: differences in validation, error handling, or call context may be intentional. Compare behavior before and after the refactor.
6. Diagnose and fix a bug from a reproduction
Claude Code
Provide the reproduction steps, observed result, expected result, and any relevant error output. Ask Claude Code to trace the failing path and explain a likely cause before changing code. Once the cause is clear, request a focused fix and inspect the diff.
Cursor
Give Agent the same reproduction and ask it to investigate, propose a cause, and then make a focused fix. Cursor documents command execution and error-fixing capabilities; review any commands it runs and the changes it makes.
In either workflow, distinguish a plausible diagnosis from a verified fix: rerun the reproduction and relevant checks yourself, and confirm that the fix does not merely suppress the symptom.
7. Write or update tests and run them
Claude Code
Ask Claude Code to identify the project’s existing test conventions, add or update tests for the described behavior, and run the relevant test command. The CLI and product FAQ document command execution; check the command and its output, and review the tests for whether they would fail on the original bug.
Cursor
Agent can edit tests and run terminal commands. Specify the behavior to cover and ask it to use the project’s established test patterns. Review the test diff and command output, including whether the run completed successfully or stopped for an unrelated environment issue.
A passing test suite is evidence about the cases it covers, not proof that all behavior is correct. Keep test coverage and implementation review as separate checks.

8. Review a diff or inspect code for issues
Claude Code
Ask Claude Code to inspect a named diff or code path for concrete risks, such as incorrect conditions, missing error handling, or unintended behavior changes. Ask it to distinguish findings from questions and to point to the affected locations. Review the actual code before acting on a finding.
Cursor
Use Ask mode to inspect code without changing it. Provide the relevant diff or direct it to the changed files, and request specific issues with locations and reasoning. If you want it to make a fix afterward, decide explicitly whether to use Manual for a known selection or Agent for broader work.
Neither product’s cited documentation supplies an independent measure of review accuracy. Treat suggested issues as hypotheses to verify, not as a guarantee that the code is safe.

Claude Code
Describe the behavior or interface that changed and identify the documentation that should reflect it. Ask Claude Code to inspect the implementation, update the relevant text, and show the changes. Check that the result matches the current behavior rather than the prompt’s assumptions.
Cursor
Use Agent when the documentation update depends on exploring implementation across the project, or Manual when the target document is known and the edit should stay confined to selected files. Review links, commands, examples, and version-specific details in the resulting changes.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.10. Delegate a scoped task to a remote agent
Claude Code
Claude Code on the web can run tasks remotely against GitHub repositories in an isolated virtual machine and can create a pull request when finished. Anthropic’s published guidance describes remote work as a fit for well-defined tasks that need less frequent steering; it presents local terminal or IDE use as more suitable when exploration and course correction are frequent. Check current availability and plan requirements before relying on this workflow. See Claude Code on the web.
Cursor
Cursor Background Agents run in remote environments and can work asynchronously. Before delegating, define the task, expected result, and boundaries; after completion, inspect the resulting branch or changes as you would any other contribution. Cursor’s documentation discusses repository access, internet access, automatic command execution, and data retention. Review its current settings and policies for the code you plan to send. See Background Agents.

Remote delegation changes where code is processed and what the agent can access. Do not assume it is risk-free: consider repository sensitivity, credentials, network access, execution permissions, and the vendor’s current data-handling settings before enabling it.
Modes, execution, and cost: what the comparison does—and does not—show
Control and work surface
Claude Code offers terminal and supported IDE workflows, including interactive and non-interactive CLI use. Cursor places its agent in the editor and documents distinct modes: Agent for autonomous multi-file work, Ask for read-only exploration, Manual for edits to explicitly selected files without search or command execution, and Custom for user-configured capabilities. Cursor described Custom modes as beta in the cited documentation; verify current status if that distinction matters.
These interfaces give developers different ways to set scope and supervise work. They do not establish a general winner for the ten tasks above, nor do official capability descriptions establish comparative accuracy, speed, reliability, or code quality.
Remote work and oversight
Both products document remote delegation, but the execution environments and documented details differ. Claude Code on the web is described as running against GitHub repositories in an isolated virtual machine and able to produce a pull request. Cursor Background Agents run remotely and asynchronously; Cursor’s documentation specifically calls out repository and internet access, automatic command execution, and data retention. Confirm current product availability and policy settings before use.
