A saddle-stitched booklet needs a page count divisible by four because each folded sheet contributes four finished pages: two on the front and two on the back. If your PDF does not fill that last four-page unit, the booklet needs blank pages to complete it. The PDF can stay in normal reading order; imposition rearranges its pages into printer spreads for printing, folding, and stapling.
Why must the page count be a multiple of 4?
The rule comes from the construction of the booklet, not an arbitrary software restriction. A sheet printed on both sides and folded once creates four page surfaces. Multiple sheets are nested inside one another, then stapled along the folded spine. Because every sheet adds four pages, the finished booklet’s total must be 4, 8, 12, 16, or another multiple of four.
Adobe states that InDesign’s 2-up Saddle Stitch workflow requires a page count divisible by four and adds blank pages to complete the final signature. The University of Dundee Print Unit gives the same requirement for saddle-stitched work. The four-page unit applies to saddle stitch; perfect binding uses a different construction and has different page-count requirements.
What happens when a PDF’s page count is not divisible by four?
The job must be padded with blank pages until it reaches the next multiple of four. For example, a 14-page document needs two additional pages to make 16; an 18-page document needs two to make 20. Check the imposed preview to confirm where the blanks appear, and follow the printer’s instructions for their placement. Software and production workflows may handle those blanks differently.
#1 Best Overall
- Create a mix using audio, music and voice tracks and recordings.
- Customize your tracks with amazing effects and helpful editing tools.
- Use tools like the Beat Maker and Midi Creator.
- Work efficiently by using Bookmarks and tools like Effect Chain, which allow you to apply multiple effects at a time
- Use one of the many other NCH multimedia applications that are integrated with MixPad.
Do not add blanks blindly if the printer has supplied a template or file specification. Confirm whether the printer expects you to provide the padded document or will add blanks during imposition.
How reading order becomes printer spreads
A source PDF normally presents pages in the order a reader should read them: page 1, page 2, page 3, and so on. Imposition rearranges those pages into printer spreads so that, after printing both sides, folding, and nesting the sheets, the booklet reads in the right sequence. The first and last pages, for instance, may print on the same side of an outer sheet.

For InDesign, Adobe describes the process as creating printer spreads that determine how pages print, fold, and bind. The document itself remains in normal reading order. The University of Dundee Print Unit likewise asks for a PDF of single pages in reading order. Unless your printer specifically requests otherwise, send single pages—not manually assembled reader-facing spreads—and let the printer or imposition software create the printer spreads.
How to print a booklet from a PDF at home
Adobe Acrobat or Reader can arrange a multipage PDF for booklet printing. The exact printer controls depend on your printer model and driver.

- Transform audio playing via your speakers and headphones
- Improve sound quality by adjusting it with effects
- Take control over the sound playing through audio hardware
- Open the PDF in Acrobat or Reader. Choose File > Print.
- Select Booklet. Acrobat arranges two pages per sheet in the order needed for folding.
- Choose the duplex method. If the printer supports automatic two-sided printing, select that option. Otherwise, print the front and back sides as separate passes, following the printer’s instructions for reloading sheets.
- Check orientation before printing the full job. Use a test print to confirm that the reverse sides are upright and that the sheets are loaded in the right direction. Check the printer manual or configuration to determine whether it supports automatic duplex.
- Fold and assemble the sheets in order. Once folded and nested, the pages should read consecutively. If they do not, check the duplex or reloading orientation before printing again.
Automatic duplex and manual duplex change how the printer handles the two sides; they do not change the four-pages-per-sheet arithmetic.
How to impose a booklet in InDesign
In InDesign, open File > Print Booklet and choose the 2-up Saddle Stitch booklet type. Adobe’s current guidance says this option requires a page count divisible by four and can add blank pages to complete the final signature. You can print directly or save the imposition as a PDF.

- Mix an audio, music and voice tracks
- Record single or multiple tracks simultaneously
- Intuitive tools to split, trim, join, and many other editing features
- Loaded with audio effects including EQ, compression, reverb, and more.
- Load an audio file and export to all popular audio formats from studio quality wav to high compression formats
Adobe’s instructions specify a single page size for this workflow. If blank pages are intentional, check the booklet output: they may need content or the Print Blank Pages option enabled so they are retained as intended. Review the imposed output before sending it to a printer, especially when blank placement matters.

Commercial printers may impose a job in their own prepress system. Ask what file format and page arrangement they want before exporting; do not assume they need printer spreads just because the finished product is a booklet.

- Page arrangement: Confirm whether the printer wants single pages in reading order or a printer-imposed PDF.
- Page count and blanks: Make sure the count completes a four-page unit, and agree who will add any required blanks.
- Bleed and margins: Follow that provider’s specifications. The University of Dundee Print Unit, for example, specifies 3–5 mm bleed and a 10 mm margin for its own work; these are not universal settings.
- Paper and creep: Ask whether the printer will compensate for creep—the outward shift of inner pages caused by the thickness of nested, folded sheets. The appropriate adjustment depends on the paper and job; Adobe describes an InDesign creep setting but does not prescribe one value for every booklet.
Production limits also vary by provider. Dundee’s guidance gives a saddle-stitch range of 8 to 100 pages depending on stock; that range is specific to its service and should not be treated as a general limit.
Saddle stitch versus perfect binding
Saddle stitch folds sheets and staples them through the fold, so its page count follows the four-page sheet unit. Perfect binding glues pages to a cover and follows different signature and page-count rules. Dundee’s service guidance says its perfect-bound jobs must have a page count divisible by two, subject to provider-specific limits. If you are choosing a binding method, use the chosen printer’s requirements rather than applying saddle stitch’s rule to every booklet.
