To “turn on GPS,” enable your device’s Location or Location Services setting, then give the app permission to use your location. Those are separate controls. Your device may estimate location using GPS satellites, Wi-Fi, cellular networks, Bluetooth, and sensors—not GPS alone—so a computer can offer location-aware features without a satellite receiver.
Before you begin: device location and app permission are different
Turning on location for the device does not automatically grant access to every app. Check both the system-wide setting and the permission for the specific app. Where available, also check whether the app is allowed to use precise rather than approximate location.
The location source matters, too. GPS can provide a satellite-based position, while platforms may combine it with Wi-Fi, mobile networks, Bluetooth, IP address, or device sensors. Available sources and settings vary by device.
Enable Location Services on iPhone or iPad
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Turn on Location Services.
- Scroll to the app, tap it, and choose an access option. When an app first asks for location, iOS or iPadOS presents permission choices, which can include allowing access while using the app or allowing it once. You can change the choice later in Location Services. See Apple’s Location Services settings guide.
Apple says GPS and mobile location are available on iPhone and Wi-Fi + Cellular iPad models. Wi-Fi and Bluetooth can also help determine location; do not assume every iPad model includes satellite GPS.

Enable Location on an Android phone or tablet
- Open Settings > Location and turn on device location. The exact wording or menu placement can differ by Android version and manufacturer.
- Open the target app’s app-info or permissions settings, choose Location, and allow access as needed.
- On Android 12 and later, check the app’s separate precise-location control if it needs a more exact position. An app may have location access without precise location enabled.
When available, Google’s Location Accuracy service combines information from Wi-Fi access points, cellular towers, GPS, and device sensors such as accelerometers and gyroscopes. This can help estimate location more quickly or accurately when satellite signals are obscured. Turning Location Accuracy off can limit the availability or accuracy of apps and services that rely on it. See Google’s Android location settings instructions.
Enable Location services on a Windows 11 computer
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Location.
- If you administer the computer, turn on Location services for the device.
- Turn on Let apps access your location for the user, then review individual app access where Windows provides it.
- If Windows cannot determine a more exact position and you want a fallback, open Default location > Set default and specify the computer’s location.
A work- or school-managed computer may have location controls set by an administrator. Windows can determine location from GPS, nearby wireless access points, cell towers, or IP address, and it may use a default location. A manually set default is a fallback for Windows and apps that use it, not a GPS fix. See Microsoft’s Windows Location service and privacy guide.

What about a Mac?
Mac location settings can vary with the installed macOS version. For current, version-matched directions, use Apple’s Mac guide to controlling which apps can use Location Services.
If an app still cannot find your location
- Check both controls: confirm system location is on and the app has permission. If the app needs a more exact position, check its precise-location setting where available.
- Improve satellite reception: move to a place with a clearer view in several directions. Walls, vehicle roofs, tall buildings, and terrain can obstruct GPS signals. A phone may use Wi-Fi or cellular location until satellites are visible.
- Allow time for a GPS fix: Apple notes that finding visible satellites can take several minutes and accuracy may improve over time. Check the device’s date, time, and time zone as well. See Apple’s guidance on GPS accuracy.
- Consider the computer’s hardware and fallback: a desktop without a usable location source may not get a satellite fix; on Windows, a default location can serve as a fallback for supported features.
Choose location access with privacy in mind
Allow only the access an app needs to work. Review its permission when your needs change; on Apple devices, apps must ask before using Location Services, and you can revise your choice later in the app’s Location Services settings.
