Their latest reported outlooks range from Meta’s $130–145 billion to Amazon’s $220 billion, with different fiscal periods, accounting treatment and non-AI investments in the mix. The plans point to a shared priority: expanding data-center capacity, compute and power infrastructure as executives say demand is running ahead of supply.
Latest reported 2026 spending outlooks
These are company-level capital plans reported as of October 5, 2026—not audited, directly comparable totals for AI infrastructure. Guidance may change, and the fiscal framing and accounting differ.
| Company | Latest reported 2026 outlook | How to read the figure |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | $220 billion | Amazon’s July 2026 plan, reported by the Associated Press, includes data centers and other technology, as well as robotics, semiconductors and satellites. It was up from the $200 billion plan announced in February. Associated Press, July 30, 2026 |
| Alphabet | $195–205 billion | Alphabet raised its outlook in July, from the $180–190 billion range in its June 2026 investor presentation. Alphabet reported $80.6 billion in capital expenditures for the first half of 2026. Associated Press, July 2026; SEC Form 10-Q, quarter ended June 30, 2026 |
| Microsoft | Approximately $175 billion | Microsoft described this as expected calendar-2026 capex on its FY2026 fourth-quarter call. Its explanation included a shift in future data-center leases from finance leases to operating leases, which affects how spending appears in capex. Microsoft FY2026 fourth-quarter earnings call, July 2026 |
| Meta | $130–145 billion | Meta’s July 2026 outlook raised the lower end of its earlier $115–135 billion company outlook from January. Axios, July 29, 2026; Meta, January 28, 2026 |
The headline ranking is not an apples-to-apples ranking of AI investment. Amazon’s figure explicitly covers non-AI categories, while Microsoft’s calendar-year estimate and lease-accounting shift make a direct comparison with other companies’ figures especially difficult. The available figures do not provide a shared AI-only denominator, so adding them together would not produce a defensible total for Big Tech AI infrastructure.
What the spending is intended to build
The build-out is a system of sites, power, cooling, servers and networks—not simply a purchase of accelerators. The companies describe different pieces of that system, and their capital plans cover broader needs as well.

Amazon: data centers and a broader technology build
Amazon’s $220 billion plan includes data centers and other technology, but also robotics, semiconductors and satellites. It should not be described as a $220 billion AI data-center budget. AWS CEO Matt Garman told the Associated Press in October that, “There is urgency to this data center build out because we aren’t the only country that sees the benefits of AI for the economy and national security.” Associated Press, July 30, 2026
Alphabet: land, buildings, servers and networking
Alphabet describes technical infrastructure spending as including servers, network equipment, data-center land and building construction. Its SEC filing reports that construction, acquisition and installation of data-center capacity can be phased over months or years, making these multi-year projects rather than instant additions to usable compute. - PCIe Gen 5 - Unlock lightning-fast data transfers with PCIe Gen 5 support.
- GIGABYTE TURBO Fan Cooling System - Indented metal cover and blower fan increase airflow intake, while the vapor chamber, all copper heat sink, and metal frame offer efficient heat dissipation. Optimized airflow design allows for easy multi-GPU scalability.
- Double Ball Bearing Fan - Delivers superior heat resistance and rotational efficiency for better performance and a longer lifespan compared to conventional sleeve fans.
Microsoft: short-lived compute and longer-lived sites
Microsoft distinguished shorter-lived CPUs and GPUs from longer-lived data-center sites on its FY2026 fourth-quarter call. Roughly two-thirds of capex in the reported quarter was for short-lived assets, primarily CPUs and GPUs. That quarterly mix is not a breakdown of the full-year $175 billion expectation. Microsoft also discussed flexibility to stage hardware and data-center build timing. Microsoft FY2026 fourth-quarter earnings call, July 2026
Meta: power delivery, thermal management and networking
Meta has described constraints in advanced packaging, thermal management, power delivery, memory and optics-based networking—components and systems needed to make large AI clusters function. Its Prometheus cluster, described by Meta Engineering as 1 gigawatt in capacity, spans multiple buildings and is under construction. The company said its up-to-5-gigawatt Hyperion cluster is expected to begin coming online in 2028; these are project capacity descriptions, not company-wide compute totals. Why companies say they need more capacity
Executives have framed the spending as a response to demand they say they cannot currently serve in full. These are management assessments, not independent measurements of industry-wide demand.
- Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said in the company’s June 2026 investor presentation that demand for its AI solutions and services from enterprises and consumers was “meaningfully exceeding our available supply.” Alphabet investor presentation, June 2026
- Microsoft said Azure demand continued to exceed capacity on its FY2026 fourth-quarter call. Microsoft FY2026 fourth-quarter earnings call, July 2026
- Amazon CEO Andy Jassy said the company would not have enough capacity for all 2026 demand and described demand already in hand for 2028 as striking. Associated Press, July 30, 2026
Those statements help explain why companies are raising or maintaining ambitious investment plans, but they do not establish that every planned data center or accelerator will be fully utilized. Capacity only becomes useful as connected power, equipment and facilities come online.

Plans are changing, and projects take time
The outlooks are not fixed annual budgets. During 2026, Amazon increased its announced plan from $200 billion in February to $220 billion in July; Alphabet raised its range from $180–190 billion in June to $195–205 billion in July; and Meta lifted the low end of its January $115–135 billion outlook to $130–145 billion in July. Microsoft’s approximately $175 billion calendar-year estimate was stated on its July FY2026 fourth-quarter call and was explained alongside a change in lease treatment.
Even when funding is authorized, infrastructure cannot be switched on all at once. Alphabet says site acquisition, construction and server/network installation may be phased over months or years. Meta’s Prometheus project spans multiple buildings and remains under construction, while Hyperion is expected to begin coming online in 2028. Microsoft’s discussion of staging some hardware and build timing reflects the same practical issue: companies can sequence deployment rather than turn every planned dollar into immediate capacity.
Community commitments and the question of returns
Data centers also affect the places where they are built. Amazon announced more than $1 billion over five years for data-center communities, for education, job training, water and energy preservation, and other local priorities. That is a community commitment, not evidence that all local impacts are resolved or that benefits will be uniform. Associated Press, October 3, 2026
Spending plans show how much capacity companies intend to finance; they do not prove the eventual return. The reported figures do not establish a comparable AI-only investment total, utilization rate or long-term return on investment across the four companies. Actual value will depend on whether capacity is completed on schedule, can be supplied with power and equipment, attracts paying demand and generates enough revenue to justify its cost.
