A slow connection is not always an internet-provider problem. Your broadband service can be working while Wi-Fi struggles to reach a device, or a busy household device can use enough capacity to affect everyone else. Check whether the problem is Wi-Fi, local network activity, or the service itself before replacing equipment.

First, separate a Wi-Fi problem from an internet problem

Wi-Fi is the wireless link between a device and your router. Your internet service is the connection from your home network to your provider. A weak Wi-Fi link can make a good broadband service feel slow; an ISP or modem fault can affect devices even when their Wi-Fi signal is strong.

Start with two comparisons: check whether one device or several are affected, and, if practical, test a computer connected to the router by Ethernet. If only one device struggles, focus on that device or its location. If multiple devices are slow on Wi-Fi but a wired device works normally, suspect Wi-Fi coverage or interference. If a wired connection is also slow, investigate the modem or service rather than buying a Wi-Fi extender. Microsoft and TP-Link offer troubleshooting guidance for Windows Wi-Fi problems and slow internet on a TP-Link router.

Six overlooked habits that can make your connection feel worse

1. Hiding the router in a cabinet

A router needs to send radio signals through your home. Enclosing it in furniture or placing it beside metal objects and other barriers can weaken the signal. Microsoft notes that home layout and objects such as metal can affect Wi-Fi performance. Keep the router in an open, central location when possible, rather than inside a cabinet or behind a large obstruction. See Microsoft’s guidance on Wi-Fi and home layout.

2. Putting it far from the devices that matter

Distance matters: a device in a distant room may receive a weaker signal than one nearby. Walls and floors add further obstacles. Compare performance with the same device in the same room as the router, then at its usual location. Google says Wi-Fi speed can vary with device type, distance, frequency, and physical barriers in its Google Nest Wifi troubleshooting guide.

If moving the router is impractical and the issue is a genuine dead zone, mesh Wi-Fi or an extender may help extend coverage. Neither can fix a provider outage or increase the speed of the internet plan itself.

3. Letting neighboring Wi-Fi or household electronics compete

Nearby wireless networks can contribute to congestion, and household electronics may interfere with wireless signals. If performance changes by room or time of day, interference is one possibility—not proof of a particular cause. Google and Microsoft both include the surrounding wireless environment among factors to consider.

Router channels and channel width depend on the equipment and local conditions. Consult your router’s documentation before changing advanced settings; there is no one channel that is best for every home.

4. Keeping streams, downloads, and updates running

Several high-demand activities at once can affect performance more than devices doing light browsing. A large download, software update, or multiple video streams may use enough of the available connection to make other activity feel sluggish. Verizon and Ofcom identify household internet use as a factor worth checking.

As a test, pause streams, large downloads, and background updates, then repeat the activity that felt slow. If performance improves, resume devices one at a time to identify what coincides with the slowdown. A device merely being connected is not the same as it actively using substantial bandwidth.

5. Using a device or Wi-Fi band that does not suit the situation

An older phone, computer, or wireless adapter may not support newer Wi-Fi standards. The band also matters: 2.4 GHz can reach farther in some setups, while 5 GHz may be faster nearby, but the best option depends on device support, distance, and interference. Google identifies device type and frequency as variables in Wi-Fi speed.

Compare the same device near the router with another device, if available. If only one device is consistently slow, check its Wi-Fi capability and software before changing the whole network. Avoid assuming that 5 GHz is always better; a farther room or obstructed path can change the result.

6. Leaving a VPN enabled—or relying on failing equipment

A VPN routes traffic through a VPN server, which can add a slower link to the path. ASUS advises that VPN use may slow browsing. If the slowdown happens only while a VPN is enabled, briefly disconnect it and repeat the same test. Treat a difference as a clue about that route, not evidence that every VPN always slows every connection. See ASUS’s network stability tips.

Old or faulty equipment can also be part of the problem: a router may lack capabilities your devices support, or a modem, router, or cable may be unreliable. Do not replace hardware based on age alone. First compare devices and Wi-Fi with a wired connection, and restart equipment according to its instructions. TP-Link’s unstable-connection guide addresses router connection problems.

Work through the checks in this order

  1. Find the scope: Test more than one device. Note whether one device, one room, or the whole household is affected.
  2. Compare distance: Test a Wi-Fi device near the router, then in its usual location. Remove obvious barriers if practical.
  3. Pause heavy activity: Temporarily stop streaming, large downloads, and background updates, then repeat the test.
  4. Restart carefully: Reboot the router and any relevant boosters or mesh devices; restart the client device as well. If your setup has a separate modem or fibre connection box, follow its manufacturer’s restart instructions. Ofcom recommends rebooting relevant network equipment and client devices in its broadband and Wi-Fi guidance.
  5. Test Ethernet, if possible: Compare a wired connection to the router with Wi-Fi. If both are slow, test directly to the modem where your setup and provider allow it, following the equipment instructions. TP-Link says a similar result in a direct-modem test points toward the modem or ISP rather than the router.
  6. Escalate based on the result: Contact your ISP if the wired or direct-modem test is still slow, or if the issue recurs across devices. If Ethernet is normal but Wi-Fi is not, focus on placement, interference, device compatibility, and router configuration.

Restarting is a reasonable early check, but it does not diagnose a recurring fault by itself. Avoid a factory reset unless you know how to restore the router’s configuration.

When buying new equipment makes sense

Match a purchase to the fault you found. An extender or mesh system can address coverage gaps in some homes; it cannot repair an ISP outage or raise the plan’s speed. A replacement router is worth considering when its capabilities, configuration, or failure are implicated—not simply because one device is slow. Ethernet is useful for a wired isolation test or replacing a suspect cable, not a guaranteed speed upgrade.

Ofcom’s consumer broadband guidance, last updated August 25, 2026, puts the distinction plainly: “Your Wi-Fi speed can be affected by your router, your device, distance from the router, walls and interference.”
