To get a Portuguese IP address, connect to a VPN server in Portugal. Install the VPN provider’s app, choose Portugal—or Lisbon if the app lists cities—and connect. Websites then see the VPN server’s public IP address rather than the address assigned to your usual internet connection. This can help with location testing or trying to reach a Portuguese website, but it does not guarantee that a service will accept the connection.
How a VPN gives you a Portuguese IP address
A VPN sends your internet traffic through a server operated by the VPN provider. When you connect to a server in Portugal, websites generally see that server’s public IP address and its apparent location. Your internet provider routes the connection to the VPN, while the VPN provider becomes an important party to trust. A VPN does not make you anonymous to services where you sign in. Proton VPN describes its Portugal servers, and ExpressVPN explains its Portugal location.
Get a Portuguese IP address: step by step
- Choose a VPN with a Portugal server. Confirm that Portugal is currently available on the plan you intend to use and that the app supports your device. Server locations and plan features can change.
- Install the provider’s official app and sign in. Follow the provider’s current setup instructions. Proton VPN’s Portugal page and ExpressVPN’s Portugal page document app-based connections.
- Select Portugal and connect. If the app offers city choices, select Lisbon or another listed Portuguese location. Wait for the app to confirm the connection.
- Check the apparent location. Use a reputable public IP lookup service to see whether the address is identified as Portuguese. This is a practical check, not a guarantee that every website will use the same location data.
- Open the specific website or service. Test the exact site you need. A Portuguese IP alone does not establish that you meet the service’s account, licensing, or other eligibility requirements.
What to compare when choosing a VPN
- Portugal locations: Check whether the provider lists Portugal and whether its app lets you choose a city or only a country. Provider locations are subject to change. Proton VPN lists servers in Lisbon; NordVPN describes selecting Portugal in its app.
- Device support and connections: Confirm support for the device you want to use and the current simultaneous-connection limit on the plan. Proton VPN’s page states up to 10 devices at once; ExpressVPN’s page states up to 14. These are provider-published limits, not independent comparisons. Proton VPN; ExpressVPN.
- Privacy information: Read the provider’s current privacy policy and any audit details you consider relevant. Treat claims on provider pages, including logging claims, as provider claims unless you assess the supporting evidence yourself.
- Compatibility with your target: A provider’s server listing or streaming promotion is not proof that a particular third-party site will work. Check the site with your own account and follow its rules.
- Price and terms: Review the current price, renewal terms, refund policy, and plan limits directly before paying. ExpressVPN’s page states a 30-day money-back guarantee for first-time customers; confirm the applicable terms at purchase. ExpressVPN Portugal.
If a Portuguese website does not work
- Confirm the VPN connection: Check that the app still shows an active connection to Portugal, then check the apparent IP location again.
- Try another Portuguese endpoint: If your provider offers another Portugal server or city, connect to it and retry. There is no guarantee another endpoint will be accepted.
- Check the service’s rules and requirements: Some services may restrict VPN connections or require other account or location conditions. Use the service’s approved access method if the VPN connection is not accepted.
- Contact the VPN provider: Ask its support team whether the selected endpoint is operating as expected.
What a Portuguese IP address does—and does not—do
A Portuguese VPN endpoint changes the apparent network location of your connection. Provider pages cite uses such as reaching regional content or services and testing location-dependent site behavior, but those are provider-stated use cases, not guarantees for any particular website. Streaming availability, financial-service access, licensing, account eligibility, and VPN blocking depend on the relevant service and may change.
A VPN is not a substitute for checking applicable laws, account conditions, or a service’s terms.
