Shut down your MacBook, unplug it, and start with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water. Wipe gently—do not spray liquid on the display or scrape it. If the mark does not lift with cautious cleaning, stop: a persistent mark cannot be reliably identified as adhesive from appearance alone, and Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider can inspect the Mac.
Remove any remaining protector carefully
If film or a screen filter is still attached, remove it slowly and gently, following that product’s own instructions. For example, 3M advises slowly pulling its filter away from the display. Protector makers’ directions are product-specific; instructions for removing residue from a protector do not establish that the same products are safe for a bare MacBook screen.
3M says residue on its own protector products may be removed with isopropyl alcohol (IPA) or other adhesive removers. That guidance applies to its products, not as blanket advice for a MacBook display. Clean the bare MacBook screen cautiously
- Power down and unplug. Shut down the MacBook and disconnect its power adapter before cleaning.
- Use water first. Dampen a clean, soft, lint-free cloth with water only, then wipe the screen gently. Do not soak the cloth or spray liquid directly onto the display; keep moisture away from openings.
- Stop if the mark remains. Avoid hard or repeated rubbing. Do not scrape the screen or use abrasive products, solvents, or adhesive remover on the bare display.
Apple Support’s instruction is: “To clean the screen on your MacBook, MacBook Pro, or MacBook Air, first shut down the computer and unplug the power adapter. Dampen a soft, lint-free cloth with water only, then use it to clean the computer’s screen.” See Apple’s cleaning instructions.

When is isopropyl alcohol appropriate?
Apple says a cloth moistened with 70-percent isopropyl alcohol may be used gently for hard-to-remove smudges or fingerprints. That is an option Apple describes for those marks, not a specific recommendation for removing screen-protector adhesive. Avoid treating it—or any adhesive remover—as a guaranteed fix for residue.
What if the mark will not come off?
A mark that remains after gentle cleaning with a water-dampened cloth may not be surface residue; its cause cannot be diagnosed reliably from a description or photo alone. Do not escalate to scraping, stronger chemicals, or more pressure. Ask Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider to inspect the Mac.
