To reduce the risk of MacBook screen scratches without a screen protector, keep abrasive debris away from the display, clean it gently, and remove anything attached to the keyboard, palm rest, or camera before closing the lid. Apple says the gap between a Mac notebook’s display and top case is engineered to tight tolerances, so material left between them can interfere with the display when the MacBook is closed.
Keep the closed MacBook clear of covers and loose material
Apple says the clearance between a Mac notebook’s display and top case is engineered to tight tolerances. Its guidance is explicit: remove camera covers, palm-rest covers, and keyboard covers before closing the display. - Remove keyboard, palm-rest, and camera covers before shutting the lid.
- Do not leave a microfiber cloth or other material on the keyboard or display as a barrier when closing the MacBook. A cloth is useful for cleaning, but Apple’s guidance does not establish that leaving one inside the closed computer is safe or protective.
Clean the display without adding abrasion
For routine screen cleaning, Apple says to shut down the MacBook and unplug its power adapter, then gently wipe the screen with a soft, lint-free cloth dampened with water. Avoid abrasive cloths, towels, paper towels, and excessive wiping. Apple’s cleaning instructions also allow a cloth moistened with a 70-percent isopropyl alcohol solution for hard-to-remove smudges or fingerprints; wipe gently.
- Shut down the MacBook and unplug the power adapter.
- Dampen a soft, lint-free screen-cleaning cloth with water. It should be damp, not dripping.
- Wipe the screen gently. Avoid pressing hard or repeatedly rubbing a spot.
- For a stubborn fingerprint or smudge, use a cloth moistened with a 70-percent isopropyl alcohol solution, as Apple permits.
Apple sells a Polishing Cloth described as soft and nonabrasive; a suitable soft, lint-free cloth is the important feature, not a particular brand.

What these steps can—and cannot—promise
These habits follow Apple’s handling and cleaning instructions and help avoid unnecessary abrasive contact. Apple does not quantify how much they reduce scratch risk or promise they will prevent every mark. The cited guidance also does not establish how to diagnose an existing mark, so do not assume that every mark on a display is a scratch.
