Cisco Unity subscriber templates are presets for creating new subscriber accounts with a shared set of voicemail and account settings. They can reduce repetitive setup, but changing a template does not update subscribers already created from it. Before following any menu path, confirm that the installed product is legacy Cisco Unity—not Cisco Unity Connection—and use documentation for the matching release.
What a Cisco Unity subscriber template does
A subscriber template supplies starting settings for a new account, such as those appropriate for a department or another common subscriber type. Cisco’s Cisco Unity System Administration Guide, Release 3.0(1), Chapter 12, Subscriber Template Settings puts it this way: “When you create subscriber accounts in Cisco Unity, you can base each account on a subscriber template.” The template’s purpose is to reduce the settings an administrator must configure separately for each new subscriber.
A template is a starting point for account creation, not a live policy that continually synchronizes its accounts. Editing a template does not change subscribers previously created from it. To change existing accounts, edit those accounts or use a bulk-edit method documented for the installed release.
Confirm the product before using a procedure
“Cisco Unity” and “Cisco Unity Connection” are distinct products with different administration terminology. The legacy Unity guide describes Subscriber Templates; the Unity Connection Release 11.x guide uses Templates > User Templates. Cisco also documents Unity Connection user templates separately in its CUPI API material. Those differences mean a Unity Connection click path or API should not be assumed to apply to legacy Cisco Unity.

Settings a template can cover
The Release 3.0(1) guide documents template pages for these areas. The settings available on a particular system depend on its release and installation.
- Profile and account
- Passwords and conversation behavior
- Call transfer and greetings
- Caller input and messages
- Distribution lists and message notification
Profile settings help identify subscribers, but the guide notes that some profile values belong on an individual subscriber account rather than in the template. Do not assume every account field can be set centrally through a template.

Handle phone passwords carefully
Cisco’s Release 4.0(4) Unity guide warns that subscribers associated with a modified template may be assigned the same phone password. For that documented legacy workflow, Cisco recommends assigning unique phone passwords after account creation with the Cisco Unity Bulk Import wizard. This is a release-specific historical warning, not a recommendation to use a legacy default credential. Follow the password policy and security controls for the installed release and your organization.

Subscribers already created from a template retain their existing account settings when that template is edited. Apply a change to those accounts individually or through a bulk-edit option appropriate to the release. For changes affecting passwords or account access, verify the resulting settings on the accounts themselves rather than assuming the template edit propagated.
