But the available evidence does not establish that this particular converter successfully processed a 1.5 GB video or where its implementation failed. Those details need project-specific test records; they should not be presented as measured results without them.
What “zero-server” means for a browser converter
In this design, the application’s media processing happens locally in the browser rather than on an application server. The ffmpeg.wasm project describes its software as a WebAssembly and JavaScript port of FFmpeg for recording, converting, and streaming media in browsers. That removes the need to send a video to a server for transcoding, but it does not remove the browser’s memory and CPU constraints.
The project says transcoding runs in a web worker by default, rather than on the page’s main thread. Its overview explains: “Multimedia transcoding is a resource-intensive task that you don’t want to execute in main thread, thus in ffmpeg.wasm we offload those task to web worker (`ffmpeg.worker`) by default.” ffmpeg.wasm project overview
How the conversion pipeline works
- Load the core. The worker initializes the WebAssembly core used for media processing.
- Make the input available to the core. The application writes the selected video into the core’s virtual filesystem.
- Run the FFmpeg operation. The core processes the input according to the requested conversion. Re-encoding changes the media streams; remuxing changes the container without necessarily re-encoding them.
- Read the result back. The application retrieves the output file from the core’s filesystem so the browser can offer it to the user.
This is the documented architecture, not a record of a particular app’s implementation. The project overview and repository describe the worker and core model: overview and repository.

Single-thread and multi-thread cores trade resources for speed
ffmpeg.wasm maintains single-thread and multi-thread cores. Its FAQ says the multi-thread version can be around twice as fast as the single-thread version, but uses substantially more memory and CPU. That is the project’s qualified guidance, not a benchmark for a specific converter, file, device, or browser. The multi-thread core also creates additional workers.
| Mode | Speed guidance | Resource cost | Implementation considerations |
|---|---|---|---|
| Single-thread core | Reference mode; no specific elapsed time established. | Lower CPU and memory use than the multi-thread option, according to the project FAQ. | Confirm the core and worker setup used by the app; compatibility still depends on the actual browser and build. |
| Multi-thread core | The project FAQ says it can be around 2x as fast as single-thread mode; this is not a guarantee for a particular workload. | Substantially higher CPU and memory use, according to the FAQ. | Creates additional workers. Any cross-origin isolation or browser requirements should be checked against the specific implementation rather than assumed. |
The FAQ also documents a 2 GB WebAssembly limit. That runtime constraint should not be treated as a universal browser input-file limit: the amount of usable capacity depends on the build, browser, device, and processing workload. ffmpeg.wasm FAQ

Why a 1.5 GB input can still run out of memory
File size alone does not predict whether a conversion will finish. During processing, the input, output, and encoder’s working data can all compete for constrained runtime memory. A conversion that re-encodes streams may have a different working set from a remux, and the multi-thread core adds resource demand. Secondary technical guidance also warns that practical capacity is lower on phones than on desktops; it is not a controlled benchmark or a universal capacity figure. - Device model and available memory, if known.
- Browser name and exact version.
- Input size, container, video and audio codecs, and relevant stream details.
- Output container and codecs, and whether the operation re-encoded or only remuxed.
- ffmpeg.wasm and core versions, plus single- or multi-thread mode and worker configuration.
- Elapsed time and peak memory, if measured, with the measurement method.
- The first observable failure: for example, whether the worker stopped, the page became unresponsive, an error was returned, or no output appeared. Report only the symptom actually observed.
Without those records, neither a successful 1.5 GB conversion nor a specific failure point is established.

- Use the single-thread core when lower CPU and memory demand matter more than the potential speed advantage.
- Consider the multi-thread core when a faster run is worth its greater resource use and the implementation’s browser requirements are met.
- Test on mobile as well as desktop if both are supported; a desktop result does not establish a phone’s practical capacity.
