AWS announced a planned £8 billion investment in UK data centres over five years, from 2024 through 2028. The money is intended to build, operate and maintain data-centre infrastructure for cloud and AI services. “Another” refers to AWS’s earlier UK investment and its planned total through 2028—not to a separate £8 billion announced in 2026.
What AWS announced
In September 2024, Amazon Web Services (AWS) said it planned to invest £8 billion in UK data centres during 2024–2028. The stated scope is building, operating and maintaining those facilities, with the aim of meeting customer demand for cloud and AI infrastructure and supporting UK digital and economic growth. AWS’s announcement describes a plan, not a report of £8 billion already spent.
AWS said its UK Region launched in December 2016. At the time of the announcement, the company reported that the region included three Availability Zones, two Wavelength Zones, two Edge Locations and a Regional Edge Cache. These are AWS-reported details about its own infrastructure footprint.
Why the announcement said “another”
AWS said it had invested more than £3 billion in the UK between 2020 and 2023. It described the new plan as taking its planned UK investment total for 2020–2028 to more than £11 billion. That earlier spending and the new five-year commitment explain the “another £8 billion” framing. AWS’s 2024 announcement does not establish that all the planned investment has since been delivered.

How to read the economic-impact estimates
AWS estimated that its 2024–2028 plan would contribute £14 billion to UK GDP through 2028 and support more than 14,000 average annual full-time-equivalent jobs at local businesses in its data-centre supply chain. AWS says that supply chain includes construction, facility maintenance, engineering, telecommunications and related local economic activity. These are estimates published by AWS, not verified totals for GDP already generated or jobs already created. AWS’s later parliamentary evidence says the job and GDP details appear in an AWS-commissioned Public First report and that the methodology uses an input-output model drawing on OECD data. AWS also cited a separate estimate by Telecom Advisory Services that UK cloud computing had a total economic impact of more than £42 billion in 2023, equivalent in that analysis to 1.6% of GDP. How the £8 billion relates to Amazon’s later £40 billion plan
In June 2025, Amazon announced a planned £40 billion investment across its UK businesses for 2025–2027. The company said that this wider commitment includes part of the AWS data-centre plan announced earlier. The two figures therefore overlap: adding £8 billion and £40 billion as if they were wholly separate commitments would overstate the announced investment. What the UK policy context does—and does not—show
The UK Government’s October 2024 announcement discussed AWS’s commitment alongside other data-centre and technology investments. It described data centres as infrastructure for computing and data storage, including AI development. What is established about delivery
The cited announcements establish the planned amount, period and intended scope, alongside AWS’s estimates of economic impact. They do not independently establish how much of the £8 billion has been spent or the realized jobs and GDP effects. When comparing investment announcements, check whether the figure is planned or spent, which years and business activities it covers, what geography it applies to, and whether any later commitment incorporates an earlier one.
