Intel appointed semiconductor executive Lip-Bu Tan as its CEO, effective March 18, 2025. The board selected him after a search, citing his technology leadership and semiconductor experience as it set out priorities that include stronger execution, product leadership and progress on Intel’s foundry strategy.

Who is Intel’s new CEO?

Lip-Bu Tan is a technology executive with experience in semiconductor design, investing and public-company leadership. Intel highlighted his 19 years on the board of Cadence Design Systems, where he was appointed in 2004 and later served as executive chairman from 2021 to 2023, after his CEO tenure. The company also pointed to his work across emerging technologies, finance, investment and mergers and acquisitions.

These are credentials Intel cited in announcing its choice, not a comparative assessment of other candidates. The company’s announcement and SEC filing do not provide a candidate-by-candidate scorecard.

When did Tan become Intel CEO?

Intel’s board decided on March 10, 2025, to appoint Tan, according to the company’s SEC filing. Intel announced the appointment on March 12. Tan’s CEO role—and his return to the board as a director—became effective March 18, 2025. He had previously served on Intel’s board from September 2022 until August 2024.

What did Intel expect Tan to do?

Intel described the appointment as a leadership change at a time when it needed to improve execution and restore confidence in its products and strategy. Its stated priorities were:

  • Deliver better execution.
  • Rebuild product leadership.
  • Advance Intel’s foundry strategy.
  • Begin regaining investor confidence.

Board chair Frank Yeary said the goal was to make Intel “a world-class products company and a world-class foundry.” Those were ambitions for the company, not results established by the appointment announcement. Yeary said Tan and the board’s discipline and focus would support the work to “deliver better execution, rebuild product leadership, advance our foundry strategy and begin to regain investor confidence.”

Tan’s stated approach

Before taking office, Tan said: “Under my leadership, Intel will be an engineering-focused company.” He also described an opportunity to remake Intel at a pivotal moment in its history. These comments set out his intended direction before his start date; they do not by themselves show how the strategy would be implemented or whether it would succeed.

Why Intel’s choice mattered

The appointment matched the experience Intel emphasized with the challenges it publicly identified: semiconductor leadership, product execution, a foundry strategy and the need to rebuild investor confidence. Tan’s long Cadence board service and previous Intel board tenure gave him experience in technology and public-company governance. The available appointment materials establish the board’s rationale and priorities, but not whether Intel subsequently achieved them.
