To keep a future session out of a browser’s local history, use its private-browsing mode and close all private windows when finished. To remove history already saved, clear it in the browser; if it was also saved to a Google or Microsoft account or synced across devices, manage that separately. None of these steps makes you invisible to websites or every network operator.
What “hide browsing history” can mean
There are two different tasks: limiting what a browser saves during a new session, and deleting records that already exist. Private or Incognito mode mainly helps with the first. Clearing browser data addresses the second. Account activity and synced history can require additional steps.
| Option | Local browser history | Account or sync history | Website or network visibility | Useful when |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Private or Incognito window | Limits local history after the session ends; behavior varies by browser. | Does not guarantee that account activity will not be saved. | Websites and some networks may still observe activity. | A temporary session on a shared device. |
| Clear browser history | Removes selected local records; deletion may sync to other devices. | Account data may remain unless separately deleted. | Does not retract records held by websites or network operators. | Removing history already recorded by the browser. |
| Delete account activity | Does not necessarily clear local browser records. | Removes selected activity from that account under the provider’s controls. | Does not necessarily clear third-party records. | Removing searches or service activity tied to an account. |
| VPN | Does not clear local history. | Does not erase account activity. | May change network-level exposure; visibility depends on the provider and configuration. | Considering ISP or local-network visibility, with provider-trust tradeoffs. |
Private browsing is not anonymity. Google says Incognito does not change what websites and services collect, and notes that schools, employers, or internet providers may observe activity. Mozilla likewise says Firefox Private Browsing does not prevent websites from seeing location or an ISP from logging activity. A VPN is a separate network-privacy measure, not a way to delete history; the guidance here does not compare VPN providers.
Browse privately on a device
Chrome on a computer
- Open Chrome’s menu and choose New Incognito window. On Windows, Linux, and ChromeOS, use Ctrl+Shift+N; on Mac, use Command+Shift+N.
- When finished, close every Incognito window to end the session.
Chrome says it removes its record of visited sites and session site data after the Incognito session ends. Downloaded files and bookmarks you create remain on the device. Sites and organizations managing the network may still see activity. Google Chrome Help: Browse in Incognito mode.

Apple says private tabs do not appear in iPhone History and are not shared in the tab list on other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. The current Apple instructions are for iOS 27, so labels and steps may differ on older releases. Apple: Browse the web privately in Safari on iPhone.
Microsoft Edge
- Choose Settings and more > New InPrivate window.
- Close all InPrivate windows when finished.
Microsoft says closing all InPrivate windows clears session browsing and download history, cookies, site data, cache, passwords, autofill data, and specified permissions. Favorites and downloaded files remain; clearing download history does not delete the downloaded file. Extensions allowed to run in InPrivate may still save browsing history, and a school, workplace, or ISP may still observe activity. The cited instructions apply to Windows 11, not every Edge mobile version. Microsoft Support: Browse InPrivate in Microsoft Edge.

Delete history already saved in Chrome
Chrome on Android
- Open Chrome’s menu and select Delete browsing data.
- Choose a time range, select Browsing history, then tap Delete data.
If history sync is active, Google says deleting Chrome browsing history also removes it from signed-in devices where that sync is active. This does not delete Google Account searches and service activity; manage those separately. Google Chrome Help: Delete your Chrome browsing history.

Remove account activity and synced records separately
Google Account activity
Go to myactivity.google.com or open the Google Account’s Data & privacy > History settings. Google offers manual deletion and auto-delete for Web & App Activity and Search history. Google Safety Center lists auto-delete periods of 3, 18, or 36 months and says 18 months is the default for new accounts (page accessed 2026). These settings concern activity saved to the Google Account, not browser history stored locally. Google notes that browser history can remain even if Search history is not saved to the account or has been deleted from My Activity. Google Safety Center: Privacy controls.
Chrome history sync
When Chrome history sync is active, history may be visible across signed-in devices. Google says deleting browsing history removes it from devices where the user is signed in and history sync is active. That deletion does not remove website server logs or records held by network operators. Google Chrome Help: Delete your Chrome browsing history.

What private browsing does not erase or prevent
- Website records: A private window does not stop visited websites from receiving requests or collecting data about a signed-in user.
- Network visibility: A school, employer, ISP, or other network operator may still observe activity, depending on its systems and policies.
- Files and saved items: Downloads and bookmarks or favorites can remain after a private session. Extensions allowed in private mode may also retain activity.
- Account history: Using a service while signed in can create activity associated with that account; private mode does not itself remove it.
- Malware: Private mode is not a malware or virus shield and does not make malicious sites safe.
If the browser menus do not match
Menu labels, lock behavior, and sync options vary by browser version, operating system, and account setup. The steps above cover Chrome on computers, Android, and iPhone or iPad; Safari on iPhone using Apple’s iOS 27 instructions; and Edge on Windows 11. Firefox guidance describes the behavior but is not a complete platform-by-platform menu map. For another device or version, consult the linked official support page for that browser and select the matching operating system or release.
