Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFor a complete Mac mini setup, you need the Mac mini, a compatible display, and a keyboard plus a mouse or trackpad. The Mac mini’s power cable is included; a display cable or adapter is only an extra purchase if the display and Mac mini cannot connect with a cable you already have. If you own compatible equipment, you can reuse it.
What to buy for a Mac mini
Apple’s Mac mini setup guide walks through connecting a display and a keyboard and mouse or trackpad. Use this list to separate essentials from items you may already have.
- Mac mini: Choose the model you want to use. Its generation matters when checking video ports and display limits.
- Display: A monitor is a common choice, but an HDMI-equipped TV or projector can also work as an external display. The display needs its own power connection if it is not self-powered.
- Keyboard and mouse or trackpad: You need input devices to complete setup and use the computer. They can be wired or Bluetooth; check whether a wired device’s cable matches an available Mac port and whether wireless devices include what they need to pair or charge.
- Display cable or adapter, if needed: Check the ports on the Mac mini and display, and whether the display includes a suitable cable. Buy a compatible cable or adapter only if you do not already have a way to connect them.
For the 2024 M4 and M4 Pro models, Apple lists a 1.8 m power lead in the box. Apple’s setup instructions say to use the power cable included with the Mac mini: “Use the power cable included with your Mac mini to connect it to power. Connect one end of the power cable to the power port on your Mac mini and the other end to a power outlet.” —Apple Support, Set up your Mac mini.
Check display and cable compatibility before buying
The right cable depends on the ports on both devices, not just the name of the display connector. Apple’s display connection guide lists examples including HDMI and USB-C cables, USB-C-to-DisplayPort, USB-C VGA and USB-C-to-DVI adapters, and a Thunderbolt 3-to-Thunderbolt 2 adapter for an older display. These are examples, not a universal shopping list.

- Identify the exact Mac mini model and its available video ports.
- Check the display’s input ports and the cables included with it.
- Choose a cable that connects the two directly where possible; otherwise choose an adapter designed for the specific connection.
- If resolution or refresh rate matters, confirm that the Mac mini supports the desired display mode with your planned number of screens before purchasing.
Apple’s current guide covers M6 and M5 Pro Mac mini models and notes that older models may have different display specifications. On M6 and M5 Pro, video is supported through the rear HDMI and Thunderbolt ports; the two front USB 3 ports do not carry video. Each model can support up to three external displays, but supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations vary by model and screen count. See Apple’s M6 or M5 Pro technical specifications for the model-specific details.
The 2024 M4 and M4 Pro have HDMI and three rear Thunderbolt ports. Apple specifies Thunderbolt 4 for M4 and Thunderbolt 5 for M4 Pro. Their display configurations differ from the M6 and M5 Pro guidance, so check the 2024 Mac mini technical specifications if you are buying accessories for one of those models.
