4K and 8K describe picture resolution; HDMI carries the video signal. Common UHD 4K is 3840 × 2160 pixels, while common UHD 8K is 7680 × 4320—four times as many pixels per frame. Whether a setup can deliver either resolution, at a particular refresh rate and color format, depends on the source, display, ports, and cable together.
What is the difference between 4K and 8K HDMI?
There is no separate resolution called “4K HDMI” or “8K HDMI.” 4K and 8K refer to image formats; HDMI is the connection and set of specifications that govern how compatible devices carry those formats. Common UHD 8K doubles the horizontal and vertical pixel dimensions of common UHD 4K, resulting in four times the pixels per frame. Product labels can cover differing formats, so check the source and display specifications rather than relying on “4K” or “8K” alone. HDMI 2.1b specification overview and HDMI Licensing Administrator’s 4K/8K comparison describe the formats and capabilities.
| Format | Common UHD pixel dimensions | Pixels per frame |
|---|---|---|
| 4K UHD | 3840 × 2160 | 8,294,400 |
| 8K UHD | 7680 × 4320 | 33,177,600 |
The pixel totals follow directly from multiplying the listed dimensions. More pixels do not guarantee a visibly better picture in every room: screen size, viewing distance, content, and the viewer all matter. The official HDMI sources do not establish a universal distance or screen-size threshold for noticing 8K over 4K.
Why resolution alone does not tell you whether a connection will work
A video signal’s demands depend on more than resolution. Refresh rate, chroma format, color bit depth, HDR, and the capabilities of the devices all affect the format being sent. For instance, “4K” without a refresh rate does not tell you whether a setup can handle 4K60 or 4K120.

HDMI 2.1b lists formats including 8K60 and 4K120, with bandwidth up to 48Gbps. HDMI 2.2 describes bandwidth up to 96Gbps and additional formats, including 8K60 full chroma and 4K240 full chroma at 10- or 12-bit color. Those examples are not interchangeable: the requested color format and bit depth matter alongside resolution and refresh rate. See the official HDMI 2.1b and HDMI 2.2 descriptions.
Which HDMI cable category do you need?
Choose a cable for the signal you intend to send, not simply for the TV’s advertised resolution. HDMI Licensing Administrator identifies three relevant categories for common bandwidth ranges; the official category and certification label are more useful than a seller’s generic “8K cable” description.

| Official cable category | Bandwidth rating | Practical guidance |
|---|---|---|
| High Speed | Up to 10.2Gbps | May be insufficient for higher-bandwidth formats; confirm the exact mode and reliable operation. |
| Premium High Speed | Up to 18Gbps | Certified for use cases including 4K60-related formats. |
| Ultra High Speed | Up to 48Gbps | Relevant certified category for formats such as 8K60 or 4K120 within the 48Gbps range. |
| Ultra96 | Up to 96Gbps | Category for HDMI 2.2 applications requiring bandwidth above 48Gbps. |
These are category bandwidth ratings, not promises that every device supports every mode in a category. HDMI Licensing Administrator’s cable-type resource describes High Speed, Premium High Speed, and Ultra High Speed; its HDMI 2.2 page describes the Ultra96 category.
How to check whether your setup supports the format you want
- Check the display’s native resolution. Confirm the panel’s resolution and the HDMI formats supported by the particular input you plan to use.
- Check the source output. A console, computer, or player must be able to output the chosen resolution, refresh rate, and color format.
- Specify the actual target mode. Note resolution and refresh rate together—for example, 4K120 or 8K60—and check required chroma, bit depth, and HDR support.
- Check both HDMI ports. The source and display must each support the requested mode; a suitable cable cannot add capabilities either device lacks.
- Choose the cable category for the requirement. For modes within 48Gbps, look for a certified Ultra High Speed cable. For HDMI 2.2 modes above that bandwidth, look for Ultra96. Choose an appropriate length and verify the certification label.
One useful comparison: 4K120 and 8K60 can both call for a 48Gbps-class cable. The resolution label by itself does not tell you which cable is adequate.

How to verify an HDMI cable’s certification
For an Ultra High Speed cable, look for the official certification label and scan it with the HDMI certification app. HDMI Licensing Administrator says certified Ultra High Speed cables are tested at an HDMI Forum Authorized Testing Center. A generic “8K” or “4K” claim is not, by itself, evidence that the cable passed that certification process. Details are available in the official HDMI cable certification guidance.
Does “HDMI 2.1 cable” prove it supports 8K or 4K120?
No. HDMI Licensing Administrator cautions that version numbers alone do not define a product’s capabilities and are not allowed as standalone cable-labeling, packaging, or promotion claims. Check the official cable category and certification label, then confirm that the source and display support your exact target mode. See HDMI Licensing Administrator’s cable guidance.

Will an 8K HDMI cable work with a 4K TV?
A higher-rated cable does not prevent a compatible 4K source and display from using a supported 4K mode. The complete chain still determines the result: the source, display, ports, selected signal format, and cable must work together. Buying a higher-bandwidth cable does not upgrade either device, and a 4K display does not automatically need a replacement cable if its existing cable reliably carries the mode you use.
Do you need to replace your current cable?
Replace it only if it cannot reliably carry the format you want, or if it lacks the certification appropriate to that use. Start with the actual resolution, refresh rate, color format, and bit depth—not the broad “4K” or “8K” label—and compare that requirement with the device specifications and the cable category. For a setup needing up to 48Gbps, a certified Ultra High Speed cable is the relevant category; above 48Gbps in an HDMI 2.2 application, consider Ultra96.
