RICO is a Windows application that presents itself as a real-time hub for routing creative control and media signals. Its project README lists MIDI, OSC, Spout, NDI, DMX/Art-Net, and several additional tools, including MQTT and audio-reactive features. It is described as a public beta for Windows 10/11 x64, and the capabilities below are the project’s claims rather than independently tested results.

What RICO is designed to do

The RICO project describes the application as a central hub for artists, performers, creative technologists, studios, and developers who need to connect creative software, hardware, and real-time environments. Its stated use cases include routing signals between applications and controlling 3D or generative environments with physical interfaces.

The project characterizes RICO as lightweight and promotes quick setup, but its README also names required runtimes. Treat phrases such as “zero setup” as promotional rather than as a description of installation requirements.

Which protocols and features RICO lists

The README presents a broad feature set. These are project-listed capabilities, not a verified compatibility or performance matrix.

Capability What the project says it does Useful distinction
MIDI Routes, learns, and remaps controller input; also lists virtual MIDI ports. Control messages can connect software and physical controllers. The project names teVirtualMIDI as a prerequisite for launch.
OSC Sends and receives OSC, including to multiple destinations simultaneously. A control-message option; the available project material does not supply a full address-pattern guide or timing measurements.
Spout Shares textures/video between Windows applications. Spout describes graphics-card-based application-to-application sharing, not a network transport. Spout’s official site gives examples including Resolume, Max, Processing, MadMapper, and TouchDesigner.
NDI Sends and receives NDI video. NDI is IP-based connectivity for discovering systems and exchanging video, audio, and metadata. RICO’s README says the NDI Runtime is required for NDI send/receive. NDI’s official site describes uses spanning broadcast, live events, and content creation.
DMX / Art-Net Controls lighting rigs through DMX / Art-Net. The available project description does not establish physical-interface requirements, universe capacity, fixture compatibility, or timing guarantees.
MQTT Connects with IoT or custom hardware. Listed as an additional integration capability by the project.
Audio analysis and guitar-to-MIDI Lists FFT-based audio reactivity with beat detection and live-audio guitar-to-MIDI. These are README-listed functions; no independent performance or accuracy results are provided.
Ableton Link Synchronizes tempo using Ableton Link. Listed as an additional feature by the project.

Spout or NDI: which connection fits?

Spout and NDI address different kinds of sharing. Spout is the more direct fit when two supported Windows applications need to share graphics locally through the graphics card. NDI is the network-oriented option when systems need to find one another and send or receive media over IP.

Spout’s site describes its transfer as “near-zero latency or overhead”; that is the technology provider’s wording, not a measurement of RICO. NDI’s site likewise describes its standard as supporting low-latency, frame-accurate audio and video, but that description does not establish RICO’s performance in a particular setup. Choose according to whether the connection is local application sharing or network transport, and confirm that the applications at both ends support the protocol you intend to use.

Platform, prerequisites, and beta status

The project README names Windows 10/11 x64 as RICO’s supported platform. It says the NDI Runtime is needed for NDI send/receive and teVirtualMIDI is required to launch RICO; it warns that the application will not launch without the listed prerequisites. Consult the RICO project repository for current release and installation instructions, since dependencies and setup requirements can change.

The README describes RICO as a public beta and says some features remain under refinement. Its statement that core features are stable and in active use is the project maintainers’ characterization, not independent quality assurance. The same repository says RICO is currently closed source, with a source release planned for a future version; source code is not presently available according to that description.

The project lists C++, DirectX 11, and ImGui, alongside libraries and components including RtMidi, oscpack, Spout, NDI SDK, paho-mqtt, miniaudio, pffft, and Ableton Link. These implementation details describe the project’s technology stack; they do not by themselves establish compatibility or performance.

Do you need a MIDI controller?

No physical controller is stated as a requirement. A USB MIDI controller is an optional way to provide physical input for the project’s listed MIDI routing, learning, and remapping workflows; the README also lists virtual MIDI. RICO’s project page does not identify a recommended controller or publish a tested-device list, so verify that a prospective device works with your intended Windows software setup.

What the available information does not establish

The project’s feature list is useful for deciding whether RICO’s scope matches a workflow, but it is not a substitute for a host-application support matrix. The available project and technology descriptions do not provide independent latency benchmarks, reliability testing, universal controller compatibility, a physical DMX interface specification, or a production-readiness assessment. Confirm the current release details and test the specific signal path and applications your setup requires.
