Before extracting code from a messy module, trace the route into the behavior you want to change, identify what must keep working, and map the calls and dependencies around the proposed boundary. A long method or crowded module is a reason to investigate—not proof that extraction is the right fix. The aim is to make a small structural change while preserving observable behavior.

What should I trace before I extract anything from a messy module?

Start with the behavior, not the block of code that looks untidy. Ask what the module does that callers or users rely on, then find the callers and tests that reveal that behavior. An internal method name may not capture every expectation placed on it.

Next, identify the entry point: the route into the module for the behavior you are considering. Follow that route to the candidate code, and note other callers, callbacks, or alternate ways execution can arrive there. “Tape one entry point” is a metaphor for making this route visible; it does not mean recording execution with a particular tool.

Then map the proposed boundary. List the methods, shared state, and collaborators the candidate code uses. Mark what would move and what would remain, and look for calls that cross back and forth between the two sides. In a large-class case study, Martin Fowler examines relationships between candidate methods and methods that are not being extracted before settling on a boundary. Fowler’s large-class extraction analysis illustrates why the code’s relationships matter as much as its size.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

When comparing possible boundaries, ask:

  • Which entry points and callers reach the candidate code?
  • Which dependencies or callbacks cross the proposed boundary?
  • What shared state or data must pass through the new interface?
  • Which existing tests can observe behavior on each side?

Entry point and seam are different things

An entry point is the route into the behavior you are trying to understand. A seam is a place where you can change behavior without editing the code at that point. Martin Fowler attributes this definition to Michael Feathers: “a seam is a place where you can alter behavior in your program without editing in that place.” Fowler’s explanation of legacy seams describes how seams can help isolate dependencies for tests, add observability, or redirect execution while displacing legacy behavior.

Tracing an entry point helps you scope the investigation; finding a seam may help you observe, replace, or redirect a dependency. A seam can be useful when a dependency makes behavior difficult to test, but the right mechanism depends on the language, framework, and existing style. There is no context-free best seam.

How to make the extraction safely

  1. State the behavior to preserve. Use callers and tests to establish what the module currently does, including behavior not obvious from internal names.
  2. Trace the route in. Follow the relevant entry point into the candidate code and note alternate callers and callbacks.
  3. Map the boundary. Record methods, state, and collaborators on both sides, paying particular attention to cross-calls and data that the new interface must carry.
  4. Use a seam if observation is blocked. Choose a dependency-isolation or redirection approach that fits the project’s language and conventions.
  5. Move one coherent responsibility. Give it a clear name and interface, preserve observable behavior, and run the relevant tests.
  6. Reassess before continuing. If the extracted unit still has tangled dependencies or no clear purpose, revise the boundary rather than extracting mechanically.

Refactoring is a change to internal structure that keeps observable behavior the same. Fowler describes it as a series of small, behavior-preserving transformations. When practical, separate pure moves and renames from logic edits so tests and reviewers can distinguish structural change from changed behavior. His large-class case study recommends this separation as part of making the work easier to inspect.

When extraction may not be the answer

A long method or crowded class is a code smell: a signal to investigate, not a mandatory refactoring recipe. Fowler notes that smells do not always indicate an underlying problem. His discussion of code smells is a useful reminder to consider the actual behavior, dependencies, and cost of changing the code before choosing a fix.

If the candidate code has many cross-boundary calls, relies on shared state that cannot be expressed cleanly, or lacks a coherent responsibility, pause. A different boundary—or no extraction—may better preserve understandable behavior. Do not treat a successful move as the goal; the goal is a structure that is easier to understand without changing what the program does.
