To have Windows 11 make the last printer you used the default, go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners, then turn on Let Windows manage my default printer under Printer preferences. Microsoft says Windows will then automatically select the last printer you used. Microsoft’s printer instructions cover both Windows 11 and Windows 10; the steps below use Windows 11’s menu labels.
Turn on automatic default-printer management
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners.
- Under Printer preferences, turn on Let Windows manage my default printer.
With this setting enabled, Windows automatically selects the last printer you used as the default, according to Microsoft Support.
Choose between automatic selection and a fixed default

| Let Windows manage my default printer: off | You can select an installed printer and choose Set as default. | You want one particular printer to remain the default. |
Microsoft notes that Set as default may not appear while Windows is managing the default automatically. To assign a fixed default, turn automatic management off, select the printer in the installed-printers list, and choose Set as default.
What happens when a mobile Windows device changes location
On mobile Windows devices, Microsoft notes that when automatic management is enabled, the default may change to the last printer used at the new location. This location-related behavior is specifically noted for mobile devices, not stated as a general rule for every Windows 11 PC.
