The clearest example came in a fight where a dragon’s rider dismounted, turning one target into two. That is promising evidence of teamwork built into encounter design—but it comes from an unreleased game’s early preview build, not a final verdict.
Is Nodusfall co-op?
Yes. HoYoverse describes Nodusfall as a co-op action game set across multiple mythologies. In its August 26, 2026 Gamescom announcement, the studio said players take the role of Weavers, form bonds with companions, battle powerful enemies, and uncover secrets. HoYoverse says clashes with formidable foes are meant to be forged through teamwork; that is the developer’s stated goal, rather than independent evidence that the combat already delivers on it.

The early hands-on reports provide a more concrete basis for judging that goal. PC Gamer’s Fraser Brown described a four-player crew and three boss-style encounters that grew more challenging. The preview included characters with distinct styles and mechanics, including a tank-like role and a teammate focused on healing. Those differences could give players reasons to coordinate beyond attacking the same enemy, although the reports do not establish a final party limit or finished character roster.
How the Maldrake fight gives co-op a tactical purpose
The strongest example comes from GamesRadar+ writer Catherine Lewis’s account of the Maldrake encounter. The battle changed when the dragon’s armored rider dismounted and began attacking on the ground. The team then had to split its attention between the dragon and the rider rather than focus on one target.

That transition matters because it changes the team’s problem mid-fight. Players may need to divide their effort, keep track of separate threats, and adapt to the new phase instead of repeating one damage routine. Paired with the distinct roles described in PC Gamer’s preview, the encounter suggests a promising design principle: co-op can shape how a boss is handled, not merely increase the number of people swinging at it.
That is still an inference from a preview encounter, not proof that every fight in Nodusfall requires role assignments or coordinated tactics. The available reporting shows one clear moment when a boss phase called for the group to divide its forces; it does not establish how often the finished game will use that approach.

What the previews suggest about combat
Brown described a brisk action pace with cooldown management and combos. He also noted a charge-and-release clash mechanic for countering an incoming monster attack. These are observations about the Gamescom build, not a comprehensive or final account of Nodusfall’s combat systems.
The reports also point to a tension between spectacle and physical impact. Lewis called the boss fights cinematic, but felt that attacks lacked some weight. The encounters may look dramatic and create useful teamwork problems while still needing more satisfying combat feedback. That caveat makes the case for co-op stronger than a blanket claim that the fighting is already polished: the encounter structure appears promising, but its feel remains an open question.

What remains uncertain
All of this evidence comes from early hands-on previews and HoYoverse’s promotional description. It cannot establish how the fights will work in the released game, whether the roles and mechanics will remain unchanged, or how consistently bosses will demand coordination.
As of PC Gamer’s August 28, 2026 preview, no release date had been set; the outlet’s later guide also said neither a date nor a year was established. Any launch timing framed as a prediction is not an announcement. HoYoverse’s official site directs players to its channels for beta access and updates, but the available information does not confirm a final platform list or release schedule.
Verdict: promising encounter design, not proof yet
Nodusfall’s Gamescom bosses make a credible early case for co-op because the Maldrake fight reportedly changes into a two-threat encounter, while the previewed team includes differentiated combat roles. That gives teamwork a potential tactical purpose. The reported lack of attack weight, along with the game’s unreleased status, keeps the conclusion provisional: the previews show an appealing direction, not a finished measure of how well co-op combat works.
